Mt Mawson, Mt Field National Park
A great place to visit and enjoy your next winter skiing holiday, Tasmania is one of the prettiest places on earth. While the facilities are basic, the price makes up for it and it is never crowded. Mount Mawson is located within the Mount Field National Park. It is minutes from the Chalet. A short drive to the top of the mountain.
You will find the skiing areas are at an altitude of about 1250m and the area regularly receives reasonable consistent snow cover. There are three 'nutcracker' rope tows and one small surface lift in the beginner's area, which is free, beginners are well catered for here. Tow belts for use with the rope tows can be hired on the mountain. The tows can be accessed from the car park.
Two of the rope tows are intermediate standard, one is advanced standard. Rodway tow is the steepest serviced ski area in Tasmania.
Everyone is catered for, intermediates and the more advance or expert skiers and snowboarders. Cross-country skiing is excellent, with beautiful high-level routes around tarns to huts. There are spectacular views over the south-west Tasmanian wilderness and you will find one of the steepest runs in the country there.
There is a dryer for your your ski gear in the Chalet.

Cool Climate Wine
Tasmania is the ‘cool climate’ wine growing state of Australia. Divided into smaller sub-regions, each micro-climate is suitable to specific cool climate grape varieties.
Tasmania won its first international wine award at the Paris Exhibition in 1848. The wine came from a small vineyard in Hobart and to this day around 120 bottles are produced each year from the remnants of those original prize-winning vines.
Tasmanian wine production all but disappeared until the middle of this century - 'too far south, too cold, the grapes will never ripen’, was the generally accepted view. However, in the 1950s two visionaries, Jean Miguet at Providence near Pipers River in northern Tasmania and Claudio Alcorso at Moorilla Estate in Hobart, proved otherwise.
Premium wine producer
Tasmania’s cool climate and long autumn days are now recognised as a virtue, closer to the climatic conditions of Europe’s famous wine regions than to those of continental Australia. The Tasmanian climate provides grapes with a long growing season and a relatively dry ripening period between January and April, resulting in wines of distinctive elegance and finesse.
Tasmania’s total wine production represents less than 0.5% of the national wine grape production, however, despite its small size, Tasmania’s 'naturally elegant' premium cool climate wines are rapidly gaining an international reputation for outstanding quality - particularly its sparkling wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The value per litre of Tasmanian wine exported is almost four times the national average and Tasmanian wines represent 6% of Australia’s overall premium wine sales.Tasmanian wine tourism is thriving and cellar doors are open around the state with most found on the with formal wine routes.
