Description

Mandala is a tastefully furnished, fully renovated, rustic weatherboard home on 5 acres of natural bushland overlooking the D’Entrecasteaux channel between Bruny Island and Tasmania’s mainland.

Catering for the full spectrum of holiday needs, Mandala offers the chance to relax in a beautiful peaceful setting or, as the mood dictates, get out and about and enjoy the island. Close to home, you could read a book on the sunny deck, carry a kayak (supplied) down to the shore for a quick paddle, have a game of table tennis in the games shed, cast a line off the rocks, or take a stroll along the shore to Alonnah beach and township (20mins). Further afield, Mandala is also the ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of Bruny Island. See the 'Activities' section below for more details.

The garden has an abundance of flowering shrubs and blends into the surrounding bushland which has been planted with a wide variety of native trees. It contains a children’s cubby house with an assortment of toys.

A small creek runs through the garden to the seashore.

Accommodation

Mandala has 4 bedrooms accommodating 11 (13 at a stretch) and has all the ingredients for a relaxing and invigorating holiday for families or groups all year round.

The large living room is comfortable and cosy and has mesmerising views of the channel and the mountains beyond.

A wood burning stove (wood supplied) keeps you warm in cooler weather and there is a TV, video, DVD and CD player.

The large sunny deck is great for outdoor dining and generally relaxing. It can also be gated off to provide a safe play area for small children. A 4-burner gas barbeque is provided.

The modern kitchen is well equipped with gas hob, electric fan oven, microwave, fridge / freezer, dishwasher and assorted electric appliances including bread maker, blender and sandwich toaster.

The games shed houses a table tennis table (plus equipment), the sea kayaks (plus paddles and PFD’s for adults and children), and other assorted recreational gear.

Activities

Bruny Island is the perfect destination for those who appreciate outdoor activities amidst the rugged beauty of unspoilt bushland, beaches, cliffs and sea.

For the adventurous, we supply 4 Bic sea kayaks for guest use (2 double and 2 single), and can also recommend the many outdoor pursuits for which Bruny Island is renowned.

Popular activities include mountain biking (an extensive network of tracks and trails caters for all standards – there are magnificent views from some of the higher trails), walking (South Bruny has extensive national parkland and state forests with plenty of bushwalking options from short strolls to longer hikes), surfing (Cloudy Bay – about 20 mins drive from Mandala – is a popular destination), fishing (cast a line from the rocks or jetty, or launch your tinny from Alonnah or Adventure Bay boat ramps) and swimming (choose from the many surf and sheltered beaches around the island).

For the less energetic, Bruny Island offers an eclectic mixture of natural, cultural and historical attractions. Things to see and do include:
- A twilight rendezvous with the fairy penguins as they come ashore at The Neck Reserve
- A visit to the Bligh Museum at Adventure Bay, and the History Room at Alonnah
- A visit to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, the 2nd oldest in Australia
- Seeking out the sources of Bruny’s gourmet produce which includes wine, smoked salmon, oysters, cherries, cheese and chocolate
- Taking a guided, catered eco-cruise to see the cliffs, islands and marine life off the southern coast of the island
- Stopping for lunch or an evening meal at one of the many licensed cafes
