Driving to Beechworth is a comfortable 3 hours north of Melbourne, 4.5 hours south of Canberra and 7 hours from Sydney. It is accesed via Melbourne to Sydney\'s major highway the Hume Freeway and then turning off at Wangaratta (South) or Wodonga (North) for the last 25-30 minute leg.

Major train and coach services operate from Sydney & Melbourne with bus connections through to Beechworth. Regular domestic flights operate into Albury airport offering hire car, taxi and bus services.

The restored Historic and Cultural Precinct offers a wonderful glimpse into the past, with a museum, parks and gardens and the courthouse where Australia\'s infamous bushranger \'Ned Kelly\' and his mother were tried. You can visit the cell where he was held in his youth and see the gaol where he, his mother and sympathisers were imprisoned, and the court house where his final trial commenced.

More than 32 buildings are listed by the National Trust and Beechworth is regarded as Victoria\'s best preserved historic gold mining town, containing a rich legacy from the last century. Gold was first discovered in the Beechworth region in 1852. In fourteen years more than 4 million ounces or 115 tons of gold was found - with a value of 2 billion dollars (1997 gold prices).

Beechworth Events

Beechworth hosts several annual festivals that celebrate agriculture, the rich history of its pioneers and heritage. These events include the Beechworth Harvest Celebration, Opera in the Alps, Ned Kelly Weekend, Celtic Festival, Drive Back in Time and The Golden Horseshoes Festival, commemorating Daniel Cameron\'s historic horse ride in 1855 on golden horseshoes.
