Description

Shelly Beach Retreat itself is undisputedly in a "stand out" location making it a very special place to be. Secreted within a Coastal Reserve with stunning unspoilt panoramic coastal views across Bridgewater Bay to the Bridgewater and Nelson Capes, no other house is visible from the Retreat ensuring absolute privacy. Regardless of the weather the endlessly changing ocean view (and the occasional whale) can be enjoyed from one of 2 decks or from beside the cosy wood fire through the large windows.

The isolation means it is unusual to see other people, or even footprints, whist walking along the pristine beaches. The 250 km-long Great South West Walk meanders past the property. Sections of this walk can be enjoyed along beaches, rugged cliff tops and through nearby tall eucalypt forests. A large breeding colony of Fur Seals can be viewed from the cliff-tops, and native fauna are often sited close to the house.

It is an ideal fully self-contained retreat away from the pressures of contemporary life.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

THE GREAT SOUTH WEST WALK
The Great South West Walk is a 250km long walking track offering walkers a unique environmental experience with tracks through vibrant native forests, majestic river gorges, high rugged cliff tops, and untamed beaches. At any location you are sure to view some of the most beautiful natural scenery and wildlife. There is always something fascinating or new to see, the seal colony, a gannet rookery, a petrified forest, the blowholes or even the two lighthouses. Designed as a long distance walking track, and for day or short walks, the walk is readily accessed from Portland, Nelson or from a number of road crossings. The walk invites all ages, abilities and tastes.

BRIDGEWATER BEACH
Known to the locals as "Bridgie" this four kilometre long safe surf beach is patrolled by Surf Lifesavers and is fantastic for all ages to enjoy.

BRIDGEWATER LAKES
These beautiful fresh water lakes provide a popular recreational area ideal for swimming, canoeing, waterskiing, sailboarding and power boating. By car, only five minutes away from Shelly Beach Retreat.

THE SPRINGS
The cliffs on the west coast of Bridgewater are composed of basalt, and covered in dune limestone. Water drains through the limestone, along the line of contact and emerges as springs along the cliffs, resulting in freshwater pools. A spectacular cliff-top walk and an interesting feature not to miss.

THE BLOWHOLES
The blowholes are a fascinating place to visit. The volcanic rock at the base of the cliff is formed mainly of basalt and scoria. Scoria is eroded more readily by the sea than basalt, therefore creating the blowholes that display spectacular spouts of sea spray during high seas.

PETRIFIED FOREST
Four kilometres past Bridgewater Beach, the Petrified Forest features petrified trunk formations.

SEAL CAVE
The seal colony can be reached by a two hour walk. Steps winding down lead to a viewing platform from which the seals can be seen playing below. Scenic boat trips can be taken to experience the seals up close.

PORTLAND
Portland is located in South-West Victoria, approximately 100km from Warrnambool, Mt. Gambier and Hamilton. Portland is a thriving city near the ocean with a busy port and numerous beaches ideal for swimming, surfing and fishing. the Powerhouse Motor Museum. A leisurely ride on the Portland Cable Tram connects the Portland Maritime and Discovery Centre, the Botanical Gardens, the World War II Memorial Lookout Tower, the Power House Museum and the Fawthrop Lagoon. There are also a number of eating establishments, suiting to each individual's tastes. Portland has a lot more fantastic and interesting places to visit and activities to do...all waiting for you to discover.

SHELLY BEACH
As its name suggests, Shelly Beach is well known for its variety of shells and is an area favoured by rock fishermen. A great place to collect shellS.
