Description
Enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bed & Breakfast in a historical setting (1886) with modern comforts. Live in the original courtroom, prisoner exercise yard and jail cells, now comfortable guest rooms with en suites, sitting area and modern conveniences. The Araluen Old Courthouse was by built at the height of the gold rush era during Queen Victoria's reign and still bears her insigna in the cast iron work. The policeman's residence is now a family suite for families of up to five.
Guests love to feel that they are living in the original spaces, including the prisoner exercise yard with intact iron bars and cell doors. The original courtroom is the guest lounge and dining room. It is a well preserved quadruple brick building from locally fired bricks.
Today it stands on 10 acres, with 3 acres of beautiful gardens, a swimming pool, hot spa under the stars, and tennis court. The valley is totally surrounded by spectacular mountainous national parks which are the backdrop to the guest rooms with no other building in sight. Take that long country walk, spellbound by the beauty of the valley.
We have four independent guest rooms, all with en suites, DVD player, heater, ceiling fan, fridge & tea/ coffee making facilities. They open directly to the garden, spa, tennis court & swimming pool.
Facilities
Our guests can enjoy a hot spa under the stars, swimming pool and tennis court. The spa is especially welcoming after a long ride to Araluen by pushbike or motorbike. There is a small charge to heat up the spa which is shared amongst guests.
Meals are served in the courtroom which is also the guest lounge area. It is especially welcoming in colder months with an open fire. Our meals can also be served on the front verandah in good weather. The courtroom has a piano for guests to use, as well as a CD player, and a large DVD and book library
The old gold store room has been converted to a modern guest kitchen. The original bricks show through the glass splashbacks. It is outfitted with stainless steel, a large oven, and cooktop (90cms wide), large fridge, double bowl sink and plenty of kitchen crockery and equipment. Let us do the grocery shopping for you.
Meals
A cooked breakfast is served in the courtroom or front veranda and is included in the tariff. We offer cereal, fruit, juice, cooked breakfast including eggs, bacon,mushrooms and tomato. Toast and tea or coffee are standard, and we are happy to vary breakfast to individualy tastes.
The new guest kitchen offers flexibility to those wishing to self-cater. We can prepare meals for you to oven bake or just heat up at your convenience, if you prefer total flexibility.
The local pub offers bistro lunches every day, and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. It is an easy 10 minute walk from the Courthouse. Braidwood also had a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Our dinners are by arrangement and we specialise in preparations for people with restricted diets, including children who can be tricky to feed nutritiously. We offer one to three course meals ($30, $40, $50 per person ) and children are half price or less. An after dinner tea, coffee and/or port are complementary. BYO (no corkage is charged).
