Description

As a summer or winter retreat, the Silver Street Studio has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. With a fascinating history, this well known icon weaves together many a story in South Fremantle. Originally built as an artist's space, then gallery, the Studio has now been thoughtfully converted into a very a comfortable and eclectic environment - an ideal getaway. On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Western Australian wine, local chocolates, flowers, Margaret River olive oil soaps, plus a breakfast hamper for your first morning. Besides fruits, this contains local jam, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas and freshly baked bread from our local German bakery.

The Studio is the perfect place in which to relax, and escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of 'all things Fremantle' from 'your own home'.

For those who need to keep in contact with the working world, there is an upstairs living space equipped with desk and broad band internet connection.

Enter the property through a small wooden door within a 'medieval' gate. Ivy trails over high limestone walls which seclude a lush courtyard garden shaded by a plane tree, poinciana, palm, olive, weeping mulberry, and grape vine in summer. An ideal setting for enjoying a BBQ, this area, in winter, can be warmed by a patio heater.

Huge glass sliding doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the main living space downstairs. The Studio has been constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other items of memorabilia, including a turret, from the old Swanbourne Hospital.

The downstairs space is open plan, has a well equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable lounge. Rugs, furnishings, and the character of the architecture create a lovely ambience.

The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a steel staircase. The bedroom area has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with best quality bedding and crisp white linen sheets. A small mezzanine connects to the bathroom, and the upstairs lounge/study area.

This upstairs room opens onto a north facing balcony which makes a lovely breakfast spot. A former kiln room, on the left, is now a peaceful reading/meditation room - and occasional spare bedroom. The balcany can also reached via a limestone stairwell connecting to the northern courtyard area below.

The downstairs store room houses our two mountain bikes which can be made available on request.

An single bed can be made available on request and/or a cot for a small baby. Please note that the Studio is not a suitable space for active toddlers.

A superb location

Silver Street Studio is very private, yet centrally placed and near to all facilities. Two hundred metres from Fishing Boat Harbour - a short walk to South Beach and/or Central Fremantle.

We are also close to a variety of great local restaurants, a supermarket, galleries and specialty shops. These include Ootong and Lincoln at the end of the street, the Fremantle Chocolate 'Factory', Manna Wholefoods, the ever popular German bakery, and more - all within 100 metres. For those who want to be 'renewed' and/or pampered, there is a beauty and massage centre, and a yoga centre just across the road to help the final unwind.

You won't need a car. On arrival in Perth, the Airport Shuttle Service can drop you off at our door in South Fremantle. The free CAT bus service runs every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel to Perth by train.

You can borrow mountain bikes on request and explore the many cycle and walking tracks which follow the coastal heathland.

Close to holiday attractions and historic sites

Enjoy the beach, the range of water sports, cafe life, art galleries and other local attractions. These include the New Maritime Museum, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Fremantle Jail, a convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, Rottnest Island (ferry terminals), local fishing spots, whale watching tours, Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum), the Fremantle night life, and more. There are also great day trips available from Fremantle through the Tourist Office

You can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our wonderful selection of books - and relax.

  • "This is the most delightful accommodation in South Fremantle. It is quaint, unique, cozy, well equipped and incredibly clean and well looked after. The courtyard, huge floor to ceiling sliding doors, timber beams, stonework are gorgeous. The owners were lovely and hospitable. The huge welcome basket and wine was a lovely touch. There is a gorgeous coffee shop with delicious coffee metres away. Fremantle's heart is a short walk away. "

  • "We adored staying at the Studio. Our short visit left a huge impression owing to the depth of character of the residence, and the hospitality of the hosts. This place has so much charm and eccentricity (and a wonderful collection of books and art to absorb) but with ample amounts of luxury, comfort and style that make it the perfect getaway at any time of year. Highly recommended!"

  • "Exceptional. The description truly captures the place, but cannot convey the very special nature of the experience of a stay at Silver Studio. Every aspect is top quality. An instant home in the unbeatably lovely privacy of a walled garden. "
    Dianne, September 2009

  • "This is one of most charming places we have ever stayed in. We would highly recommend this studio to anyone who wants a cozy retreat. Hugh and Judy are wonderful and will go above and beyond to make sure that your stay is wonderful. Kathy and Tom Roberts"

  • "A hidden treasure within walking distance to everything in Freo. Wonderful presentation and loads of personality. So much better than a sterile hotel room. Thanks again!"
    Martin, January 2008

  • "What a unique experience. Our accommodations were splendid. It was the highlight of our trip. We have been telling friends and relatives more about this quaint studio than any other part of our trip. We would recommend it to anyone we know who may be travelling to Perth. "
    Robert, January 2008

  • "This place has the most amazing enchanting atmosphere you could hope for, when you enter through the huge medieval gate you step into another world. Highly recommend Silver Street Studio."
    Peter, August 2007
