Description
As a summer or winter retreat, the Silver Street Studio has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. The Studio is the perfect place in which to relax, and escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of 'all things Fremantle'.
Originally built as an artist's space, then gallery, the Studio has now been thoughtfully converted into a comfortable and eclectic environment. The Studio has been constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other items of memorabilia, including a turret, from the old Swanbourne Hospital.
Entry to the property is through a small wooden door within a 'medieval' gate. Ivy trails over high limestone walls which seclude a lush courtyard garden. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. This is an ideal setting for breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or evening BBQ.
Huge glass doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the downstairs living space which is open plan - has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfortable lounge. The rugs and furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architecture create a lovely ambience.
The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a sculptural steel staircase. The bedroom area has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with best quality bedding and crisp white linen sheets. A small mezzanine connects this space to the bathroom/dressing/sitting area. This is an airconditioned space and has a small desk away from the main living area for those who need to 'work'.
This upstairs space also opens onto the north facing balcony which provides a wonderful 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars (see image). The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, is now a peaceful reading/meditation space - and occasional spare bedroom. The balcany can also reached via a limestone stairwell connecting to the northern courtyard area below.
The downstairs store room, opposite the toilet, houses two mountain bikes which are available on request.
On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Western Australian wine, local chocolates, flowers, Margaret River olive oil soaps, plus a delicious breakfast hamper for your first morning. Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, this contains locally made jam, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made meusli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local German bakery just at the end of the street.
An single bed can be made available on request and/or a cot for a small baby.
Please note that the Studio is not suitable for active toddlers, the frail or fainthearted. It is a wonderfully ecclectic, idiosyncratic space that truly rewards the adventurer, and those with creative spirit who want something a little different from an ordinary hotel suite. This well known icon has a fascinating history and weaves together many a local story.
The Studio is in a superb location
Silver Street Studio is very private, yet centrally placed and near to all facilities. Two hundred metres from Fishing Boat Harbour - a short walk to South Beach and/or Central Fremantle.
We are very close to a variety of great local restaurants, specialty shops, galleries, fresh food outlets, a supermarket and cafes. These include Ootong and Lincoln just at the end of our little street, Manna Wholefoods, the ever popular German bakery, and more - all within 100 metres. For those who want to be 'renewed' and/or pampered, there is a beauty and massage centre, and a yoga centre just across the road to help with the final unwind.
You won't need a car. On arrival in Perth, the Airport Shuttle Service can drop you off at our door in South Fremantle. The free CAT bus service runs every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel to Perth by train.
You can borrow mountain bikes on request and explore the many cycle and walking tracks which follow the coastal heath.
We are close to many holiday attractions and historic sites
Enjoy the beach, a range of water sports, cafe life, art galleries and other local attractions. These include the New WA Maritime Museum, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Fremantle Jail, the convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, and the Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum). All are walkable, or you can catch the CAT bus. Fremantle has a vibrant night life. There are also great day trips available and ferries leaving for Rottnest Island, local fishing spots, whale watching areas. These can be booked through the Tourist Office.
You can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax.
