Take a breath of fresh air and step back in time. These unique stone/slab huts, located in the picturesque Moonbah Valley region of the New South Wales Snowy Mountains (15 minutes drive from the ski resort town of Jindabyne), enjoy private frontage to the Blue Ribbon declared Moonbah River - the regions most pristine trout stream - (complete with resident platypus). The Lake Hut also fronts a small dam containing brown, brook and rainbow trout.
"Moonbah Hut looks great on the website, almost too good to be true. But guess what? It is true!! No enhanced photos. Its not so much a hut but an experience. The peace and quiet, the isolation, the fauna, the fresh air, the space to relax and escape whatever you're trying to escape. Inspirational stuff indeed. Oh and a great shower as well. Wish the place was ours but as that isn't going to happen we'll have to settle with going back again at the first opportunity. A truly wonderful part of the country. Don't hesitate, just GO!!!! Dale & Belinda
Explore the bordering Kosciuszko National Park (150 m from the Lake Hut & 20m from the River Hut).
Savor the mountain air and clear night skies with a gazillion stars - an astronomer's paradise. Go for a walk and see brumbies, wild deer, wombats, 60 plus species of birdlife.....take a picture.....paint a picture.....the scenery is breathtaking:
"Couldn't of had a more enjoyable time if we tried. Wildlife galore - the wombat down by the river was so cute - looked just like the RSPCA ad, but without the bandage! The kangas, emu and brumby harem were great. At night, who needs TV? The frogs lulled us to sleep and the cockatoos visited in the morning. Thanks Brett, we had a fantastic time & look forward to visiting again".Darren & Claire, Canberra.
If you're feeling particularly invigorated, go mountain bike riding, (Norco 24 speed suspension bikes are available for hire), or maybe take a dip in the cool, crystal clear waters of the Moonbah River.
If all this sounds a little too tiring, just sit in the rocking chair on the verandah and read a book.
The huts are very cosy (even in -15c) and the Lake Hut sleeps a maximum 4 people, ideally 2 adults and 2 young children & the River Hut a maximum 5 persons. There are 'inside' bathrooms, (no outhouses here).
Local telephone is connected, however you can make long distance calls reverse charges, if required.
The bedding is high quality and all beds have electric blankets.
The fishing is outstanding. Expert guiding, tuition and or fly tying, can be arranged. (Rods and all gear required, are available for hire).
Both of the hut's feature huge, stone open fireplaces and with snow on either Christmas or Boxing Day, on 6 of the past 9 years, the fireplaces can be enjoyed on most nights of the year. There is also a wood stove (and a twin electric hotplate) for cooking and a small fridge/freezer to store your catch in. All cutlery, crockery, cookware, etc is supplied.
There are few modern appliances, as the huts are very traditional - No television reception or playstations!
Moonbah Huts are the ideal and unique summer, or winter, getaways. Unfortunately Moonbah Huts are not suitable for pets.
Prices for the Lake Hut range from $195-$350 per night & the River Hut from $295-$495 per night, depending on time of year, number of guests and duration of stay.
Minimum 2 night stay.

Brett, what a magical place! My daughter must have thought so also, as she has NEVER slept so much since she was born 7 months ago! Moonbah Hut completely took us into relaxed mode and we have come home feeling fantastic. You are an outstanding host and accomodated to all our needs. We truly felt it was a home away from home. Hope to see you next winter! :)))Kris, Simone and Arianna Krebs 30/11 - 05/12/09.

What a great place - we were not disappointed!
The attention to detail and style gave the house the authenticity and feel of the early settlers WITH the comfort of a heated slab, electric blankets, quality bedlinen, robes and towels.
Highly recommended and hope we get to stay again.

If you like granite walls, timber beams, stone fireplaces, mountain streams, snow gums, starry nights and the feeling that you're staying in a place that seems like it must have been built in 1822 (all with the modern comforts of in-slab heating, bathrobes and gas hot water) then get yourself here! Moonbah Hut is a lovely little place that has been hand-built and kitted out with thought, care and style. It's in a beautiful landscape too (don't be fooled by the dryness around Jindabyne on the way in - this place is well-watered and thriving). If you're keen and have time you can even cook using the 'Canberra' wood-burning stove (we managed lamb shanks in stout with mash & peas). If not, use the hot plates! The owner, Brett, is a perfect host and has thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and memorable. Tips: Bring a torch for wombat-spotting and a star chart for constellation-spotting. Oven-mitts would also be handy if you're planning on using the wood burning stove.

Trout, trout, oh mighty trout, you elude us on this day. 1 fish, 2 fish, 3 fish, 4 fish ,off the hook and away! We'll try again in the morning in hopes of one for tea. If we get one up on the bank I'll shout: "Yipee!".
We're are extremely happy that we were able to spend 2 nights here at Moonbah Hut. It was a wonderful suprise on our 3 week vacation and we plan to stop again on our next trip back. The Hut was super comfortable with all that we needed. Such a cosy place to be. The flyfishing tips were truly appreciated and we hope to continue when we go fishing next in Alberta. Thankyou Brett for your kind and friendly hospitality. TB & Beau - thankyou for your warm welcome and company. All the best..Dennis & Lisa

Three perfect days! Thankyou for your hospitality Brett. Picking berries for breakfast, flyfishing for those playful trout, swimming in the river, climbing Kosciuszko, canoeing up the Thredbo River and around some of the lake and watching the storm clouds form - are just some of the memories we'll treasure (not forgetting playing with Tb & Beau of course!!) MOONBAH HUT IS A TASTE OF PARADISE.

What a truly delightful place - The Hut with so much charm & character! We loved the attention to details - flowers - old tools - bamboo fly rods - chocolates (Thankyou!) and so much more. Interesting collection of books & old magazines! Even the musik was just right to get us into total relaxation mode! The only time my blood pressure went up was watching a massive brown trout come up behind my fly (black mudeye pattern) in the pond.I watched it swallowing the fly, only to explode half a second later, launching into two spectacular leaps - breaking the leader at the later and disappearing with my fly as souvenier! Thankyou for a lovely stay!
