Ellywan in the news. we have been proud to be a part of the "Arts in the Valley" festivals , here is an interesting review of one of the concerts held on the property as well as in insight into the housei: April 2009
Experience Frozen Music at Arts in the Valley
Nestled into the side of Cambewarra Mountain is the unusual house, Ellywan, designed by renowned architect Ian McKay.
Mostly glass and steel, the roofline echoes the surrounding hills. The massive glass windows allow an insider to feel as though the rainforest is a seamless continuation of the space.
The performance here on Sunday May 3 at 11am is part of the hugely successful Frozen Music series. The title of this series comes from Schullers remark that Architecture is frozen music. Ian McKay will introduce his design
and lead patrons on a guided tour. This will be followed by a unique concert in which Australias most celebrated indigenous didgeridoo player, William Barton, will improvise around readings by actor Diane Smith of poems by the remarkable indigenous poet Noonuccal Oodgeroo. Oodgeroo (formerly known as Kath Walker) wrote poems about many aspects of her life as an indigenous woman in Queensland. Her remarks about the political and moral turmoils she endured are scathing, direct and memorable.
This will be a performance to savour, and the memories will be sure to last long after the event.
Festival is delighted to have him performing in the Frozen Music series. William will be joined by Di Smith. If youve seen Muriels Wedding, or watched A Country Practice or Cop Shop or attended performances at Sydney Theatre Company, you will have seen the remarkable work of actor Di Smith. AtEllywan, anoutstandinghousedesignedby architect Ian McKay, these two performers will present a program on Sunday 3rd May based around Di Smiths reading of poems by indigenous poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal (formerly known as Kath Walker). Noonuccals poems are feisty expressions of her outrage at the situation of indigenous Australians and her deep love of the land.
Tickets: Frozen Music available as part of Full Festival Package. Tel or for booking form. Photograph above: Ellywan attracted a large audience during the 2007 Festival
