Description

Spectacular seaviews from private 2 1/2 acreage paradise, cosy comfortable retreat style 3 bedroom home with woodburner, that's Bali Hai, located in Arakoon, South West Rocks, 3 km. from the main beach with great sea-views from its spacious verandah's, amid the beautiful surroundings of this furnished house in colonial Balinese style. It will guarantee you a very relaxed time with its South-Asian ambiance. The strategically positioned hammock will get you on top of things in no time. The house has next to the living-room with annex kitchen, 3 bedrooms that will house 6 guests comfortably. And has all the essentials like a barbeque/outside dining facilities, and a TV/DVD/CD./Cassette player to fine-tune your background sounds. Large video library, also for kids. If you should get enough of the quiet and the birds, check out The South West Rocks Area, just 38 kilometers North of Kempsey and is right in the middle of a sunny mini climate between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. The area has a number of small deserted beaches and beautiful "Hat Head National Park", and great lookouts like Smokey Gap Lighthouse. The town has a nice public bar, where you can meet the locals and eat and drink day & night, one Chinese restaurant, 2 pizzeria's and 2 little sea-food restaurants on the boulevard that will cater to your needs. But the best thing you can do is BBQ on the verandah of "Bali Hai", or go to Smokey Cape lighthouse to enjoy your food on one of the four free-to-use electric BBQ's. The fishing boats on the McClay river, that flows into the ocean at S.W.R. will supply you with all the fresh fish (caught daily) that you might need, and the oysters alone will make you a regular visitor of South West Rocks.

The South West Rocks area and Hat Head National Park with all its wild life, the walking tracks, the beaches, and the general relaxed atmosphere of the whole area, will guarantee you a great time, and will make you a local in no time.

Sydney Morning Herald Travel Section writer visits Bali Hai: April 22-23 2006

This is a story of endurance, of long drives, long swims and long moments wondering why I'm doing this. It started months ago when a friend asked if i'd do an ocean swim with her at South West Rocks. "Sure," I said, with the vague thought, that something would come up and we'd both be too busy. But here we are in the car, driven by her husband, with me in the back with their two children, aged nine and seven. It's while we're stuck in Friday afternoon Pacific Highway traffic hell, as the kids tell "knock, knock" jokes, that I start to wonder. South West Rocks is one of my favourite coastal towns, on Trial Bay, with glorious beaches, walks through the surrounding national park and historic Trial Bay Gaol and Smoky Cape Lighthouse to visit. But it's 450 kilometres north of Sydney, really too far to drive iust for the weekend. It takes us six hours, with a dinner break at Oliver's Real Food, a fast-food outlet that sells fresh. healthy food. It feels too close to Sydney for a stop, only about an hour north on the freeway, near Wyong, but it's worth it. Much, much later, we reach our destination. Our holiclay rental is at Arakoon, the small community just south of South West Rocks and a prettier place to stay. It's 10.30pm, but we have no trouble finding Bali Hai. It's very quiet, apart from the frogs and crickets outside. We sleep well. In the morning light we can fully appreciate the place. Presumably the name Bali Hai is a reference to the musical South Pacific, specifically the song about the idyllic island where "your own special hopes, your own special dreams, bloom on the hillside and shine in the streams".
We are certainly perched high on a hillside, surrounded by bush, with the few neighbouring houses barely visible. No streams in sight, but there are distant views across Trial Bay. At this stage, my own special hopes and dreams are that tomorrow I manage to swim the 2.7-kllometre course around that bay without sinking. The beach isn't within walking distance from Bali Hai but the peaceful, secluded position makes up for that. The three-bedroorn house is spacious, almost as though built for giants. The open-plan kitchen-dining-living area is a huge expanse with a soaring cathedral ceiling and a wood-fired heater. The bathroom's big, as is the master bedroom, a deck runs around three sides of the house and there's a video library with lots for children. There are two toilets but only one shower - an outside one would be nice for post-beach rinses. In the kitchen, the microwave is placed awkwardly above the stove and an enormous wooden benchtop has been plonked on top of the built-in kitchen bench.
However, these are minor quibbles. It rains on and off all Saturday, which makes it perfect for lolling around the house, snoozing, reading, playing games and watching videos. In the afternoon we heave ourselves down to the beach, to the spot where we'll start tomorrow, swimming alound to the South West Rocks surf club, a speck in the distance. It looks a long way to walk, let alone swim. For dinner we try the Country Club, which looks like a UFO that's landed halfway between Arakoon and South West Rocks. Inside it's typical RSL style, with pokies, bars, garish carpets and all the ambience of a domestic airport. We opt for the small a la carte restaurant section, screened off in one corner by a row of potted plants. It seems pricey for a place like this - $25.90 for a main - but the qualiry is good, the portions generous and you don't pay extra for vegies. The staff allow the kids to eat from the cheaper buffet. They scoff just about every'thing on their plates (except the chicken wings - avoid these).
For local dining, I'd also recommend Geppy's Seaside Restaurant in South West Rocks and the Trial Bay Kiosk near the camping ground at Arakoon. On Suuday morning we register at the surf club with nearly 200 other swimmers, then drive around to the starting point. It has stopped raining but there's more of a swell than we've seen before on the sheltered bay. The men start first, then it's our turn. I have another one of those “why am I here?" moments but to cut a long swim short, I make it to the finish line and come 140th. I also remember why ocean swimming is fun - you feel fantastic afterwards. It's sad to leave Bali Hai so soon after we've found it, but there's a feeling we'll be back. As the song says, "In your heart, you'll hear it call you: 'Come away... come away.’"

Guest Reviews

  • "We really enjoyed our stay. The house is extremely well equipped especially for little ones. It is one of the best places we have stayed at in a long time. Chris was very approachable and nothing was too much of an effort. I will certainly be reccomending King Tide Townhouse to others. Will definately come back. Thanks for a wonderful time away, all the little extras made life so much easier."
