Description

This beautiful quirky straw bale house has all the ingredients for a magical holiday. The house has a rambling quality, which makes it ideal whether you are a couple wanting a cosy hideaway, or a large group wanting a special retreat. Completely secluded amongst olive groves and bush, with glorious evening light on the magnificent karri trees, you can relax on the front veranda and listen to the sounds of nature, with kestrels, wagtails, blue wrens and frogs all around.

When the wind comes from the West, you can hear the crashing of the surf on Redgate Beach just over the ridge.
The house has the wonderful insulating qualities of straw - cool in the summer, warm in the winter. A wood heater with abundant firewood from our own plantation will ensure your warmth and cosiness whatever the weather!

Stroll around the farm, and you are likely to see kangaroos and emus. Go spotlighting at night in the natural bush behind the house, and you'll find possums, phascogales, bandicoots and maybe even a coupan!!! :)

The house itself is spacious, with several living areas, 2 TVs with free-to-air satellite reception, a fully equipped kitchen, with plentiful good quality pots, pans and appliances, an enormous dining table made from a marri tree cut from the farm, beautiful lead-light windows and comfortable beds.

There are 6 large bedrooms - 5 with queen beds (one is on a loft), and one with twin beds. The enormous upstairs lounge can be closed off for a 7th bedroom with a sofa bed.

There are 3 bathrooms with loos, so no need to queue!

There is a slate top pool table in the games room, as well as a table tennis table which can be wheeled out for a game on the back patio.

A short drive down Redgate Road takes you to the wonderful beaches of Redgate, or head to the bright lights of Margaret River only 10 minutes away. The prestigious wineries, Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate, Xanadu, Cape Mentelle and Redgate are 5 minutes away. The delightful boutique wineries of Witchcliffe Estate, Serventy and Devil's Lair are also a mere 5 minute drive.
Alternatively, just stay put, relax, and enjoy a bit of bucolic bliss!!!

We like to offer favourable rates for longer stays - just ask. We are happy to negotiate. At Easter or Christmas/New Year, we will only consider bookings for at least a week. This gives us the time we need and value with our own families, so hope you'll understand.

Other public holiday week ends 3 night minimum.

LEAVERS - we do accept leavers, but under some fairly stringent conditions. We've been very pleased with most of our leavers groups, and believe in giving them a fair go.

Activities

There is horse riding in the vicinity, or bring your mountain bikes for a blast through the National Park trails. There is a local surf school, and plenty of wind-surfing or kite surfing for the intrepid. Fishing, whale-watching, caving - everything is here or within easy reach. Go rock-climbing or abseiling. Take a Winery Tour, climb the Leeuwin Lighthouse - whether you want to fill your days with activity, or nothing at all - this is the place to do it!
If you are interested in any particular activites, ask us to provide info on local providers. We may be able to help!

Pets

We welcome well behaved dogs of all sizes.
Dogs deserve holidays too! And they do love it here - so much space to run and play.
Owners should be aware that there is no secure dog-fenced area, although the house is 400m from the road, so a safe distance from the sparse local traffic.
We ask owners to keep their dogs off the furniture and out of the bedrooms, and not to leave them unattended inside the house. They can be chained on the verandah, or shut in the laundry room or the games room if necessary.
If they have coats that shed hair, owners should be prepared to clean up the hair for the benefit of future visitors. Owners are also asked to clean up their dogs' droppings from the garden area and around the outside of the house before they leave.

  • "This place is amazing for adults and kids alike. The farm walks, feeding the donkeys, pig, peacocks and ducks. So cozy and homely and quirky. :) just when you thought you had seen all the details of this place you are wrong. Definately needed to stay a minimum of 4 nights. So i am going to have to book again to enjoy it all over again. And the cake - one word AMAZING :) thanks Carolyn for opening up this fantastic house to the world :)"

  • "We spent a wonderful week at The Straw House. Our hosts were exceptional with a very well stocked home. Even if we had been confined to the house there was so much to do with an amazing library of books, videos and games. Kitchen was amazingly well stocked for the large international guests we had. Never found anyhting that we were short of with so many people. Thank you for a very memorable holiday."

  • "What a great house to please all the guests...6 adults, 3 teenagers, 2 kids under 7, & 2 dogs. Everyone had their own space, we never felt crowded & there were no queues for the bathroom!! I would highly recommend for children-there were so many games, puzzles, toys & books, no need to take anything for entertainment. The house was warm, welcoming & extremely spacious & close to wineries, beach & bush. We had a ball & the cake was sensational. Thanks Carolyn & Mark for sharing your place with us, our kids did not want to leave!Julie & family."

  • "The Straw House was just fantastic, so relaxing and perfect for families. A weekend was just not long enough so we have already booked a longer return visit! Highly recommended."

  • "This place is just so relaxing! I went for here for leavers 08 and I have been thinking about the place all year. You forget the time and the noises of the city and you forget mobile phones because its so peaceful. The dogs were a wonderful addition to our unforgettable leavers. I think it'll have to be a yearly trip because once you go you don't want to be anywhere else. "

  • "Fantastic house, great location, owners (who live on site) were very helpful and friendly and ensured we had all wanted. Distinct living areas which were great for two families and also for splitting kids and adults in the evening. Plenty of wildlife to see. Will definitely go back again!"
