Description

This is the secret hinterland hide away that has up til now been word of mouth only. The cottage is an eclectic mix of style and comfort. And feels like you're staying in your own holiday house

The 10 acre roperty has been planted with a variety of tropical fruits - perhaps a grapefruit for breakfast, avocado for lunch and a custard apple for dessert!
The star attraction is the privacy and the beautiful Wilsons River that provides an excellent swimming hole and a rejenerated rainforest to wander through or have a picnic lunch.

The layout of the cottage includes combined kitchen and dining room, lounge, main bedroom with double bed and second bedroom with double bed and bunk beds, bathroom and covered deck.

You're in the hills but we do have everything a modern holiday maker could want - Electricity, cold and piping hot running water and will be turned on prior to your stay. We have an upright gas stove & oven, fridge, dishwasher, wood burner and cd/radio/ipod dock, tv and dvd, basic furniture, cutlery, crockery, blankets and dooners for all beds + a CD library and some games and cards. Outside you can cook on a great wood barbeque or on the new gas barbie. Plus we have an iron, electric blanket and all the kitchen appliances you’ll need to whip up delicious meals.

The Federal Store: The store is the only shop in the village and is a meeting place for the locals for anything and everything. It acts as the supermarket, bottle shop, post office, newsagent, petrol station and eftpos outlet.

All you need to bring are sheets, towels and provisions. Some tips: A torch for night time spotting, gum boots for wet weather, tea towels and table linen for glamour dining.

Trips in the area

Within the region can be found a number of attractions.

Byron Bay:
Eastern most point of Australia. Lots of restaurants and shops in this rapidly growing tourist spot. Beaches such as Wategoes, Broken Head, Tallow and the Pass are well worth a visit. A pleasant walk and picnic can be had from Wategoes to the lighthouse. There is a golf course on the south side of town.
Ballina:
The home of the big lobster, movie theatre and airport.
Bangalow:
A ‘pretty’ town and now bypassed by the highway. The town has been restored to it’s former glory and hosts galleries, second hand/antique stores and cafes. Try the Utopia and visit the country market on the last Sunday of the month.
Minyon Falls:
15 minutes by car from Federal is a 300m cascading waterfall into the valley of the palms. Picnic grounds, look outs all set in rainforest. A number of walks, including a 5km walk to the bottom of the falls.
Brunswick Heads:
10 minutes up the Pacific Highway from Bangalow. Great pub for a counter lunch and lots to discover.
Lennox Heads:
Best right hander on the coast, but watch the rocks.
Nimbin:
Hippyville!
Lismore - Lizard ville:
Bustling regional centre 30km west of Federal. Supermarkets, cafes, airport and University.
Mount Warning:
A day trip for the more adventurous.
Mullumbimby:
A 10km drive from Federal along the Coorabel ridge, giving breathtaking rural and coastal views. ‘The biggest little town in Australia’
The Channon:
30 minutes west, tricky to find but worth the trip for the monthly market (2nd Sunday) great variety of plants, food and crafty produce. Along with the sights and sounds.
The Gold Coast:
Only an hour up the highway to glitz, glamour and gluttony. Casino, Pacific Fair and airport.

Just some suggestions, but you can discover the rest yourselves.

  • "This is a beautiful, secluded property in a gorgeous part of the world. We stayed with our three young children who loved wondering around the property, playing with the neighbour's dog and 'camping' on the bunk bed. It does take some time to travel to and from the house to local towns and beaches (accentuated by our young kids who wanted to visit the beach every hour), but the scenic, wandering, lazy laneways are a treat unto themselves. Stay here if you want a retreat, a writing weekend or a romantic escape...the view from the toilet alone is quite magical...we have already recommended it to those we love the most."

  • "Thank you soooooo much for sharing your fantastic property with us. We had such a nice time. You are very blessed to own such a lovely corner of the world. We were a bit delayed on the night we arrived so arrived in the dark........that was a challenge but found the gate eventually without bothering any other property owners .... te he These are the things I liked the most: The Symphony of birds at 530am were absolutely awsome. Birds I had never heard before. The seclusion away from the maddening crowd. The funky house decor ....especially that beautiful wardrobe and dresser in the main bedroom. I enjoyed many hours listening to your music collection. The Rolling Stones best 500 got us singing and dancing much to my neice's enjoyment. I especially love the lovely trees you have around the house which kept it cool in the heat. Even though we had rain every day, we still had the best break in ages. I will definitely be wanting to book again in the future. Once again , Thank you for sharing. It was GRAND! regards debra"

  • "Loved the remoteness of the property - just sitting on the porch and listening to the birds while reading a book. Nice having the swimming hole as well and it doesn't take long to get into town or to the beach. Lovely relaxing holiday!"

  • "To wake up to the birds and the sound of the wind in the trees was such a delight for a city dweller. Close enough to the gorgeous Bangalow shops and Wategos beach but far enough away to feel like a local and not a tourist. Perfect!"

  • "River House (aka Federal Hilton) is a beautiful place to stay. The house is relaxed, comfortable and yet also very stylish. Our son loved playing on the large porch, not to mention the trampoline. The trees and surrounding area are just so beautiful. And the small river at the bottom of the property is really lovely. We would certainly go back, and recommend it to others."

  • "5 beautiful days of sunshine, glorious views and plesant surrounds. Lovely country side. And then 5 days of heavy rain and over 48 hours without power. One way to have a relaxing holiday. All good though. Came back to reality/city and miss the peace and quiet already. Recommend to anyone. "
