"The property was beautiful with sweeping views of the bush, bay & Maria Island. A lovely location to relax & explore the scenic coastline & forests. A top spot; definitely worth a visit!" Bryony Jan 08, Rating 5/5

The House & Property

The holiday house contains a large master bedroom on the 3rd level with a queen-size bed and 'moon-light', 2 double bedrooms with their own deck on the lower level and a window seat/single bed, all overlooking the ocean. 1-2 extras can be accommodated in the lounge room (huge wrap-around sofa), plus there is an infant port-a-cot.

Fully equipped modern kitchen including dishwasher, new full-size refrigerator, large stove, oven, microwave, all new appliances, etc. Laundry and unique clothes dryer. BBQ and outdoor family-size table on the main deck.

Large, open-plan lounge/dining room around a huge, slow combustion wood stove (with heaps of cut wood in the shed across the drive from the main house), with digital TV, DVD, stereo CD, etc.; 8-person wrap-around couch; full-size dining table, built-in book cases, writing desk, reading alcove with books, etc.

Hardwood floors with Oriental rugs throughout. Ceiling fan and skylights in the 2-storey cathedral ceiling.

Two levels of wrap-around decks (total 97 m2; 1000 sq ft) overlooking the property, Wielangta Forest and down to Marion Bay, Cape Bernier, Cape Peron, Maria Island and the Tasman Sea, plus a third secluded deck with tea table on the shaded west side of the house. Tree swing and trampoline for the kids. Outside tables and chairs ideal for leisurely dining on the sunny main deck, plus a Cape Hatteras hammock and heaps of accessible yard and hillside.

Land for Wildlife & Vacinity

Wielangta is 40 acres of heavenly private property with abundant wildlife including falcons, eagles, kookaburras, quolls, bandicoots, wombats, potoroos, wallabies and pademelons. The property has been approved and is part of the Tasmanian Land for Wildlife scheme.

We are actively working with Land for Wildlife and the Understorey Network to create better land for native wildlife connected with Wielangta Forest. Three creeks cross the property and there are two dams (ponds). The garden area has an abundance of native shrubs and trees including various grevillea, bansia, acacia (wattles) and callistemon (bottlebrushes) set against Wielangta Forest.

Watch the sun rise out of the ocean each morning, and the moon over the evening ocean, from the decks and from elsewhere on the property. Birders bring your guidebooks, and look for brown falcons, boobooks, yellow-tailed black cockatoos and many different varieties of robins including the flame and dusty robin. Whale watchers grab your binoculars.

This is an eco-friendly house and property. The house was built from natural materials, much of it recycled polished timber. All rainwater is collected and used. Heating (only necessary in winter) is by a huge wood combustion stove, with cut wood immediately available.

There are bush walks on the property and throughout the adjacent Wielangta Forest, home to the magnificent Eucalyptus Regnans (the tallest flowering plant on earth) as well as the rare and endangered Swift Parrot (a migratory parrot for whom Wielangta is its breeding stronghold) and Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle. Out of respect for the wildlife, and future guests, no pets and no smoking anywhere on the property. However, a bottle of excellent wine from one of our nearby Bream Creek and Cape Bernier boutique vineyards awaits you on arrival!

  • "if you are after a peaceful holiday and want to base yourselves on the Tassie East coast, Wielangta is perfect. We enjoyed the wooden house, the front porch with views to Maria Island, the pademelons visiting the garden each night. The house is comfortable and clean. Can't wait to be back next year."

  • "We had a lovely time at Wielangta and would totally recommend it! If you want a place to relax and have a real holiday then this is the place. We were there as a family with 3 kids and we all had a great time. The house would suit couples, families, groups of adults - its really suitable for all. Beautiful scenery, friendly wildlife, gorgeous log fire, great location - loved it all! Would love to come back again and I am sure we will."

  • "We absolutely loved our stay, saw amazing animals and had the peace and smells of Tasmania with us for weeks afterwards. The house was exactly everything I had dreamed of, and if it weren't on the other side of the world, I would surely come again soon! A perfect house for a stay with kids and family who want to be close to nature."

  • "Thank you for a truly wonderful Christmas break in Wielangta. We loved the log-cabin feel to the property, and the surrounding gardens and bush were just beautiful; however, we didn't feel a million miles away from civilisation which was comforting for us city bods! The nightly visits from the wallabies and possums were great, and we even adjusted to the odd visit from a (giant!) spider! I'm pleased to report we didn't once switch on the television - we were too busy bush walking, relaxing on the wonderful veranda, enjoying fresh fish on the BBQ or exploring the local sights of Tasmania. I would highly recommend this property for families who are looking for a spacious, tranquil, yet convenient spot in Tasmania where you can really feel 'back to nature'. We had seven adults in the house, but this was easily manageable, even with the one bathroom. Privacy may be a slight issue for some (there were no bedroom doors as such due to the unique lay out of the house) but this wasn't a problem for us at all. All in all I would highly recommend Wielangta. Not only was our stay wonderful, but the owners were incredibly helpful in the lead up to our visit and helped us to plan a great holiday. We will definitely return one day!"

  • "Thank you for the recent lend of your beautiful house in a breathtaking location. It would be impossible to not come away feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to face the world. We had abundant stars, sunshine, fresh air and wildlife. A perfect place to reconnect with family, nature and oneself. Thanks again. PS Can we have a ceramic type baking dish in the otherwise well equipped kitchen for our next visit! It was the only thing that we lacked during the whole stay! Amanda T UK"

  • "A very special escape into the bush yet minutes away from the superb marion bay. The view is oustanding. Pademelons ventured into the garden every evening and a robin decided that the deck was home (very apt for the time of year). The house is extremely comfortable, spacious and well laid out. I would highly recommend the house for a wonderful holiday in Tassie."

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Wielangta and loved the tranquillity and nightly visits by the Possums. Would highly recommend it as a place to stay and explore South East Tassie. A particular highlight of our stay was an eco-boat tour from Port Arthur with sightings of Dolphins, albatross and a feeding humpback whale! "

  • "Our family had a lovely restful holiday at this property. The kids loved exploring and playing on the trampoline and swing. It had everything we could possibly want. Thanks for sharing your special piece of Tassie with us."

  • "What an extremely relaxing holiday! The wildlife, the views and the log fire were all fantastic. The kids loved the clothes line, so much they actually wanted to hang the washing out! The possum at dinner time became a regular. We took DVD's and only watched one in the 8 days we were there. My favourite enjoying a glass of port in front of the fire with local nibblies. "
