A great time to unwind or play tourist to the many attractions that Cairns, Palm Cove, The Great Barrier Reef, Kuranda and Port Douglas have to offer.

Attractions

To value everything that far North Queensland has to offer we suggest that you HIRE A CAR.

On arrival to your Retreat in the rainforest you will notice the change in humidity compared to the city surroundings. The high-set location allows for a cooler experience than the high temperatures that Far North Queensland usually offers. So you will really experience perfect one day and perfect the next; so just about perfect all year round.

During your stay at the retreat be on the lookout for the following:
The Blue Ulysses Butterfly.
The Green Tree Frog.
The Dreaded Menace - the Cane Toad.
Feed the Bush Turkeys.
If you’re lucky you might see a regular visitor of the rainforest the ‘Racing Lizard’. (They have sharp claws so look, but don’t touch).

Crystal Cascades is a 3 minute drive away. On the way to crystal cascades, drop the kids off at 'Laser Tag' for a fun controlled activity within the rainforest.
Laser Tag is an outdoor combat team sport much like skirmish. The kids will be entertained for about three hours so relax and spend time with your partner or leave your man with the kids to join the fun and head into town to shop ''till you drop'' or enjoy a romantic picnic or you can brave the cool mountain waters and swim the Crystal Cascades.

Tennis is a 2 minute drive away and is available night and day.

The famous Palm Cove Beach is located 20 to 25-minutes by car. Golf enthusiasts, this is where it begins.
Life savers are present all year round at Palm Cove beach.
Please be aware that between November & June it is the stinger season and you should not swim at the beach unless you are within the stinger nets or wearing lycra suits.
Palm Cove beach is a great place for breakfast or dining and we highly recommend NU NU for dining and a stroll along the beach.

A great day out would be to take the train up to the famous Kuranda markets and join the Skyrail for the return journey.
Your vehicle will take you into the rainforest, cascading water falls and the almighty Barron Gorge, a deep chasm lined with dense rainforest vegetation. A must for all visitors.

Cairns is right in the heart of one of the seven wonders of the world; the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef is at your finger tips with most reef companies offering pickups from your retreat. If you are not a good swimmer, new to snorkelling or have kids, we recommend a day out at Green Island. They offer a submarine tour where you will be able to see what divers experience. The kids can also experience feeding the fish.

For the enthusiasts that are confident in the water we recommend ‘Ocean Spirit Cruises’ or ‘Quicksilver’.
Ocean Spirit offers a great day out where you can snorkel, scuba dive and sail home. Quicksilver has fast catamarans departing from Cairns via Port Douglas, to pontoons on exclusive ribbon reefs. Both companies offer you lunch on board. Whichever company you choose it's a day to remember on the Great Barrier Reef.

Please do not forget your sun block and a hat.

For the romantic, you might desire ballooning with a champagne breakfast and breathtaking views over Kuranda and Mareeba.

For the family, take the scenic drive to Port Douglas and enjoy breakfast with the birds at the Zoo. Or make your first stop the Cairns Zoo and check out the 8 meter crocs before venturing onto Port Douglas for the Sunday markets.
Head to Mossman Gorge for a refreshing dip and pick wild mangoes from the trees - there is so much to do and see.

Cairns offers cable water skiing which is very popular with the kids as well as go cart racing for the dads who want to be a kid again.

An assortment of brochures and maps are available at the retreat to assist you in playing tourist.

Please feel free to contact us if you require further information on the retreat or tours.
Within 5 minute drive are the following available facilities: Woolworths, hairdressing salons, family hotel/restaurant, pizza, bottle shop, Thai takeaway, fish n chips, full medical centre, post office and much more.

Within 1 minute drive from the retreat is a general store/coffee shop with Sunday afternoon entertainment, a children’s park, walkways and cycle tracks through the rainforest.

Within 10 minutes drive is Edge Hill surrounded by coffee shops, restaurants and exclusive boutiques. This is all set alongside the Botanical Gardens.

Within 15 minutes is Cairns city centre. There are a multitude of restaurants along The Esplanade. Opposite the water front of Cairns City Harbour you can stroll the many walkways to boutique shopping or shopping malls, movie cinemas and the Pier eateries that overlook the million dollar boats from all around the world. Nestled in amongst all of them is the Cairns Casino and the Civic Theatre for art, music, bands and local theatre shows.

A taxi trip to the city would be approximate $30.00

A free bus to and from the local "Red Beret" hotel is available from the retreat. The Red Beret has a fabulous laid-back restaurant, which is very family-orientated. The restaurant also has an in house playground for the children to enjoy in a safe enclosed environment.

The retreat welcomes all ages, groups, couples and families.
If there is something missing or a special request please don’t hesitate to contact us.
We are also available to arrange fruit baskets, champagne or flowers - all you need to do is request and we do our best.

  • "Hi Mary, We left on time at about 4am on the 19th, we had a fabulous time at Rain Forest Retreat apart from a health issue with Dianne. She had chronic asthma the first night we were there and in an effort to find a cause we went to the local Woolworths and purchased four non allergic pillows thinking the goose down may have been the cause. Replacing them really didn't change much she still had the asthma problem. We left the pillows at the property as we were unable to take them on the plane. We worked out after a couple of days that she in fact had chest infection. Once we knew that she was able to treat it with antibiotics. What this all meant was that we spent a lot more time at the property than first envisaged, we spent a lot of time lazing around the pool and just generally relaxing. It made us realize just what a perfect place the Rain Forrest Retreat was to stay; we loved everything about it, the location, the superb presentation facilities and appearance etc. etc. (I could go on and on) Thank you to you and Stephen for making it available to us we couldn't fault anything about it. I left the keys in the location that you requested and put the bin out at the bottom of the drive. Kind Regards Melvyn & Dianne ps the last 24 hours were an eye opener for us with the rain filling the pool to overflowing more than 4 inches (100mm) Wow! But hey it wasn't unpleasant and it was still warm so no complaints there either. Never seen rain like that in Adelaide. :) "

  • "We have found your property to be of the highest standard and appreciate the ambience of the house and all the extra comforts that you have provided for us. We actually don't have any suggestion to improve the experience. The best place we have stayed at! Thank you Mary "

  • "Dear Mary Absolutely Perfect. Great for all ages from the 8 year old all the way up to Nan at 70. Beautiful surrounds, easy access to all sites. Everything we needed to entertain is here. Next time, we will spend a lot more time here. Six days was not enough! The Goddard Family "

  • ""It's been a wonderful stay here. The house is great, spacious, beautifully furnished and equipped with everything - we kept finding things - buggies for the children, beach toys, etc, etc (only thing missing just because I didn't bring one was a hairdryer!) And the surroundings are quite wonderful. To have the forest so close and to look out on those amazing mountains was such such a delight. All really unforgettable - many thanks, Caroline, Miriam & Layla (England), Ellie, Nigel and Rose (Adelaide)." "Thank you for creating a family friendly yet still luxurious house. We have, between us, two very lively and energetic 2 year olds. Being able to relax and not worry "too" much about the kids destroying their surroundings was fantastic. The house has provided us with everything we could have asked for and more. Thank you so much, Ellie, Nigel and Rosie and also my mum Caroline, sister Miri and niece Layla." "

  • ""Thank you for a wonderful holiday house. It was exactly what we needed, a home away from home, with a lot more sun! All the baby stuff was fantastic, so much more than we expected. We're definitely going to get Eve a little rocking swinging chair - she loved it! This was our first holiday as a family and we have some wonderful memories that will last forever. Eve has had the best time. Can't wait to come back. Best wishes & good luck with your son Love Kate, Josh & Eve" "

  • "Hello Mary, We had one of the best holidays ever. The retreat was fantastic and it was so peaceful and quite & very hard not to relax. Even the Dog was content & happy. We found the place with no problems thanks to your directions. The fruit platter was massive and was a pleasant surprise - especially the champagne that was chilled. We were welcomed in by Elena (co-ordinator) who was very professional and explained everything to us. We have said nothing but nice things about our experience at the retreat. It is a must to visit and we hope to return soon. Thank you very much Mary and Elena "

  • "Dear Mary, we arrived back home in Berlin two days ago and are still recovering from endless hours on the plane. Staying in your house was the perfect finish of our tour that took us from Sydney to Cairns. We can only join all those entries in your guestbook. It is a great place to be and it will surely be our choice again for future visits. Thanks for the delicious fruitplatter and the bottles of red and white wine. We spent our evenings on ginger beer and orange juice and took the bottles home in our overweight luggage without getting fined. Many thanks to Elena who patiently awaited our late arrival (blame the Reef HQ in Townsville!). Truly Beautiful Accommodation! Mathias, Lilly & Britta from Berlin "

  • "Thank you Mary and Stephen, for a wonderful weekend in your beautiful house. Everyone really enjoyed it and the pool was a big hit with the kids. They swam morning and night! You thought of everything and all the little extras like the sandalwood mozzie sticks, beautiful thick towels, candles, and the lovely hand and body wash in the bathrooms were really appreciated. The beautiful rainforest setting and views were a delight to wake up to each morning. We will highly recommend your place to friends and family and once again, thank you very much for creating a truly magical experience. Anita and Steven"
