Description

The Uki Guesthouse welcomes everyone, but most especially people with disabilities and users of wheelchairs.
Our focus is on Supported Independence, that is, enabling our guests to be as independent as possible by incorporating good design with technology (such as remote-controllled gates for easy access, electronic bidet for dignified personal hygiene, electronic pool transfer chair, wireless pendant call transmitters etc) as well as personal care and attention. We can provide light assistance with activities of daily living such as showering, dressing, dining and retiring.
As a Registered Nurse, Jules can also assist guests with their medications (which must be in a Webster Box or similar).

[NB: Regrettably we are unable to attend to the needs of those requiring heavy lifting or constant supervision. We are, however, happy to work with and assist carers.]

Facilities

There are four large guest bedrooms, each with
* premium quality latex queen beds (hypoallergenic);
* bedlinen, towels and bath robes;
* reverse cycle air conditioning (individual remote control);
* ceiling fans;
* mini-fridge.
Three of the bedrooms open directly onto wide verandahs through French doors.

Guests share three well-appointed accessible bathrooms, each equipped with
* anti-slip flooring;
* wide, open showers;
* grip rails;
* wall-mounted, double pull-down shower seats.
One bathroom also has an electronic bidet for dignified personal hygiene.
Bathrooms are spotlessly maintained and hygienically disinfected with high-pressure steam.

For access and hydrotherapy purposes, the saltwater pool has
* marine-grade stainless steel hand rails just beneath the surface of the water;
* a wide sloping “beach” area;
* extra-wide tread stairs;
* a self-operated electronic transfer seat;
* an automatic gate, operated by either keypad or remote control.

Computer nook
* Fast desktop computer (Windows XP, Office 2003)
* Large 61cm LCD monitor —great for watching TV, working on two documents simultaneously or for those with a visual impairment.
* Large letter keyboard with Braille overlay. (The default setting is large font and high contrast colours.)
Our internet connection is the fastest available, and our wireless network means you can bring your notebook (or hire ours) and surf the net 24/7 from anywhere within the Guesthouse property.
We have an array of office facilities and peripherals, and can help with your printing, copying and faxing requirements.

Entertainment
* Large 127cm digital TV with surround sound and connected to the web
* DVD recorder
* CD stacker, iPod dock
* 3/4 slate Billiard table—expertly restored with premium Gold Tournament English felt.
* Small library and assortment of games; magnified light, low vision playing cards, large print books and Braille scrabble.

Multimedia Presentations
If you wish to make powerpoint presentations with full multimedia support, you’ve come to the right place. Use a wireless notebook with our fully integrated system to control and display your presentation on the digital TV screen, link to the internet and play music or DVDs.

Location

Uki (pronounced “you-kye”, meaning "place of many ferns" ) is located in the far north eastern corner of NSW and is approximately
* 4 km from the turnoff to the World Heritage-listed rainforest of Wollumbin Mt Warning National Park
* 15 minutes from Murwillumbah
* 30 minutes from Mullumbimby, Nimbin and the surfing beaches of Cabarita (Bogangar) and Kingscliff
* 40 minutes from the Gold Coast International Airport (Coolangatta)
* 45 minutes from Byron Bay, Bangalow and Currumbin

The Uki Guesthouse is ideally situated in the heart of the Village, directly across from the historic Buttery — home to Babareki Beads, Precious Earth Pottery, Re’s Intrigues, Mama Aum and several other shops well worth browsing for unusual or unique items.
The Buttery Bazaar is held on the third Sunday of every month, and although there are a variety of items for sale, the event is primarily an outlet for our local artisans - predominantly artists and sculptors.
Adjacent to the Guesthouse is First Light Natural Therapies and the licenced Uki Café (open seven days a week including Friday and Saturday nights).

Wollumbin Mt Warning
Uki is situated on the banks of the upper Tweed River and nestled at the foot of Wollumbin Mt Warning —the central basalt plug of one of the most extensive shield volcanos the world has ever seen. Today Wollumbin Mt Warning stands at 1157 metres, and is the highest, most easterly point in Australia, making it the first place of the Australian mainland to be touched by the rising sun at Autumn and Spring Equinox.
When it last erupted 23 million years ago, the Tweed Volcano was almost 2 km higher than it currently stands and covered a massive 7000 sq km. The erosion caldera formed since the last eruption is easily visible on satellite pictures and Google Earth as the rim of the Tweed Valley — the largest erosion caldera in the southern hemisphere.
It is not surprising that such a dominant geological feature (given the name “Mt Warning” by Captain Cook in 1770 to caution future mariners of dangerous offshore reefs) was, and remains, spiritually and culturally significant to the local indigenous Australians, the Bundjalung people.
Called `Wollumbin' meaning “cloud catcher”, “cloud warrior" or “fighting chief of the mountains", the traditional mythology of the Bundjalung people explains the frequent lightning and thunder observed on the mountain as manifestations of battling warriors, and the landslides of the steep caldera escarpment as combat wounds.
Mount Warning was dedicated as a national park in 1966 and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Listings in 1986.
