This area offers visitors a wonderful variety of activities for day trippers or holiday makers alike. Sandgate is on the northern shores of Moreton Bay and offers a beautiful natural environment. The area is a 30 minute drive from Brisbane city, 20 minutes to the airport or a 35 minute trip by train from the city.
The area is bordered to the west and south by unique wetland areas - Tinchi Tamba, Deagon and the internationally recognised Boondall environmental parklands.
To the east is Moreton Bay's marine park with both Moreton and Stradbroke Islands visible from the foreshore. The foreshore has extensive parklands extending along its length with pathways for walkers and bike-riders and plenty of room for picnics. There is also 3 natural lagoons that lie within the area. The water and its surrondings areas offers boating, fishing, water skiing, kite surfing, kayaking, sailing and much more. The Sandgate area was once a sleepy fishing village and still today has that relaxed, close-community feel only found in small towns.
There is a mixture of heritage buildings and homes that pay tribute to Sandgate's rich history. There is a variety of cafes, restaurants and fish & chip shops to choose from when it comes to dining. A good selection of both private and public schools are in the area. Trains and buses service the area.
There is a local shopping village, convenience stores and major shopping centres are a short drive away. With its cooling bay breezes, this area is often degrees cooler than other Brisbane suburbs. Within minutes you can access exits and entrances (north and south) to the Gateway Arterial Highway for trips to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
