Hahndorf was stablished in 1839 by Lutheran migrants from Prussia and is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. There is still a strong German flavour in the town, most evident in the smallgood shops and German bakeries that line the main street. While in the area you can visit the former home and studio of Sir Hans Heysen - The Cedars. There are several good winery cellar doors in the area and the Hahndorf Farm Barn is an enjoyable stop for families. Hahndorf has plenty of souvenir shops, craft outlets and galleries, including the Hahndorf Academy.
To get to Hahndorf from Adelaide, take the South Eastern Freeway from the city of Adelaide, and turn off at the Hahndorf exit, a drive from Adelaide of about 20 minutes.
