Description

This is House on the Hill.
Perched on the side of a hill this contemporary beach house overlooks the trees and ocean of Emu Bay.
The house is designed as a coastal retreat for its owners and has an intimate connection to its bush surroundings and nearby sea.
Here one can experience the comforts of a simple modern beach house in a 5acre setting.
The location, the incredible views and the house provide for a perfect retreat, a holiday and a place for relaxation in all seasons.

House on the hill is a house with a strong inside-outside connection. The living and outside areas are north facing with sweeping sea views. One can experience the unique location from all rooms at any time of the day and throughout the seasons.
Bedroom: There is a Queen-size bed with views over the trees to the ocean.
Bathroom: White tiles, a jarrah vanity top and a large window facing the sea.
Kitchen and living: A large open space with an adjoining deck. The stainless steel kitchen with gas stove and electric oven, has all necessary utensils and cooking requirements.
3m high sliding doors open onto the main deck and below there is a BBQ deck.
For cooler days there is an open fire for heating the living areas.
A 4m long day bed at the end of the room looks out over the landscape to the water.

An outside shower sits under the trees for an after beach wash.
The house is private on its 5acres but only 700m from the 4.5km beach of Emu Bay.

Emu Bay is a quiet costal hamlet located on the northern side of KI. Its 4.5km long white sandy beach is accessible to vehicles and provides safe swimming. There is also a jetty and a boat ramp.
The Sealink ferry arrives from Cape Jervis at Penneshaw. The distance from Penneshaw to Emu Bay is approximately 75km, all on bitumen.
Emu Bay to Kingscote is 18km along a bitumen road and from Emu Bay to the airport takes 15 minutes.
House on the hill serves as an ideal base for touring the Island due to its central location and its proximity to Kingscote.

In Kingscote you will find most services including supermarket, petrol station, post office, bank, tourist information etc.

  • "What an amazing space. Every aspect has the sensational view that is Emu Bay. Congratulations to Colin and Cecelia. The use of raw materials which are warming, the lateral lines blending in harmony with nature, the solitude stunning. Two days in, felt like a week. Well done!!! We can't wait to return, thankyou both for the opportunity."

  • "Just a short note to say how much we enjoyed our week at House on the Hill. It's not very often we get to stay where there are no street lights and the vista at night is as beautiful as the day. We had a lovely time and were sorry we couldn't stay another week. A great place for a relaxing holiday."

  • "House on the Hill is a tranquil place and much thought has gone into its construction. The views are expansive and it is a great place to relax and unwind. The daybed is perfectly positioned and one can happily sit there for hours enjoying the outlook. The hosts are very helpful and have imbued the house with their own personality. Kingscote is close by, which was handy when we found that there was no replacement items of some basics like dishwashing liquid and pepper. Thoughtful inclusions such as tea light candles, good coffee and beach towels were appreciated. We felt very much at home there and really enjoyed the peace."

  • "Is this heaven? maybe...if you love magnificent views ,pristine beaches, wildlife at your doorstep(sometimes on it!),the feeling of being away from the world completely..this could be your heaven too. We felt so lucky to have found this great house. We stayed for 10 days and fell into a gentle pattern of daily runs and swims, fishing, wandering the nearby bays and back roads. The little town of Kingscote is nearby for provisions and there are plenty of local wineries. We loved this place."

  • "What a wonderful house and like previous posts we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the view, the privacy, the space, the comfort and the amazing design that even put stay to the heatwave - and that feeling of "coming home" after the long treks around the rest of an island much larger than we had realised - and our hosts ? a very, very special thanks to you Colin and Cecilia for your caring, your follow up and your concern for us in the heat and for also allowing us to share this little piece of heaven for just a little time that we will long remember"

  • "I echo the sentiments of another review that the photos don't do the house justice! It really was pretty spacious and ingeniously designed. Clever Swedish use of space, angles and different materials. It's a beautiful yet unpretentious house, which is exactly our taste. Every room faced the large Bay and the positioning of the house right at the far end of the land meant that there was a real sense of privacy. Great kitchen to cook all that fresh KI fish and lamb in. We were glad we spent a week there to take the time to enjoy the house and drive those huge distances to get to anywhere on the island. Spotted dolphins, seals and stingray in Bay. KI is really remote and has a tiny population, so having a well equipped house that you love spending time in is key to enjoying the holiday. Thanks to the owners!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the House on The Hill, from the moment that we arrived we felt right at home. The house has been designed very well with a rustic look on the outside and all of the mod cons you could ask for on the inside. The view from the front room and decking is just amazing we could have sat there all day just taking in the view. At night time we relaxed in front of the fire with a glass of wine listening to some music (be sure to take your ipod the stereo system has a docking station) Having a modern complete kitchen was fantastic with everything you need supplied by the hosts including herbs & spices. The location of the property at Emu Bay was a great base to explore the island from. The only issue we had was deciding wether to stay in for the day and enjoy the house or head out to explore the island. I would definitley recommend The House on The Hill to others and will be looking fwd to returning there soon. Thank you Colin & Cecilia for allowing us to enjoy your property and making us feel welcome."

  • "We loved this house; small but perfectly formed! We wanted for nothing and only wished we had a couple more days to relish the comforts of the house, the privacy, and that glorious view!"
    Daniel, September 2009

  • "Wow - what a beautiful house! It was so nice to feel a bit secluded in a very open plan, modern, well thought out house with stunning views. The owners were so helpful and I knew it would be a great experience from before we left. The house really felt like a home too which was so nice. Throw rugs, games, dvds, cds and lovely kitchen ware. We also forgot to take binoluars and there were some there to use. All the little touches add up to a lot! I would never stay anywhere else on Kangaroo Island. Enjoy!"
