GENERAL INFORMATION

Getting 'UP River'

There are so many fun alternatives. As UP RIVER RETREAT is water access only, you can BYO boat, hire a boat from one of the many nearby marinas, or the easiest alternative is to catch a water taxi from Kangaroo Point. Kangaroo Point is where the F3 Freeway crosses the Hawkesbury River just 20 mins up the F3 freeway north from Hornsby (Hornsby is approx. 40 mins from the CBD). After a 10 minute boat trip up river you can be relaxing on your balcony on Friday evening after work to watch the sunset.

If you bring your own boat (max. 20 ft) you can launch it at Kangaroo Point or at the boat launch ramp beside the Hawkesbury River Bridge. You have your own boat mooring on the shared jetty beside your retreat. Contact us for details.

If using the water taxi you need to book it in advance by phoning Hawkesbury River Water Taxi on . At the same time you may wish to enquire about a package deal from the water taxi company. This includes to and from in the water taxi and your own runabout mored at your jetty to be used throughout your stay to explore the river and its many beaches or lunch at a riverside restaurant. Marine Cabs on also provides a water taxi service.

  • "We had a lovely stay. Took our own boat and did a bit of fishing (we let them go) and picknicking on the river. It was lovely to sit on the swing and spot the family of Tawny Frogmouths. We went for a walk along the riverfront track and saw an echidna, a brush turkey and a channel-billed cuckoo. Spotted a tree snake on a rock along the Fire Trail. Spotlighting picked out a mother and baby possum. Magpies and kookaburras were looking for a feed on the grass out the front. Had my first go at baking sourdough bread - moderately successful! Lovely, peaceful, relaxing holiday. Thanks."

  • "This was our 3rd visit to "Up the River" once you have stayed there you would not look for anywhere else. Everything you need for a relaxing time is there. Peaceful setting to just read, relax and fish. The fishing never lets us down, this is the only place where fish are still plentiful. I would thoroughly recommend "Up the River" for your next holiday."

  • "We just wanted to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your house. So much so..we did not want to leave. It was almost perfect. The only complaint being the weekend went too fast. Your house is beautiful, very warming, comfortable and very clean. We thank you for the opportunity to stay and great memories for us. Scott Feb. 2011"

  • ""UP RIVER RETREAT" is one of the nicest homes I have ever stayed in. It has all the modern conveniences in it, yet you feel like you are a million miles away from the city. If you need to relax, unwind, this is the place to visit."

  • "A fabulous relaxing week for myself and my family. Thanks to you Peter and Dawn for a very well appointed holiday house. Everything that we needed was provided - I imagine that living here would be idyllic but there would be the need for dedication to ferrying all your "stuff" from there to here! We had a swim in the "water hole"on the hottest day - this was a highlight. Having a decently powerful boat is a must - 2 stroke not enough. Recommending this place to anyone seeking quiet times away from city pressures. "

  • "the property was lovely, i would definitely go back and stay again. This is the place to stay if you want to be somewhere remote and quiet."

  • "Up River is a wonderful place to stay, it is well appointed, immaculately presented and is ideal as a place to base a Hawkesbury weekend getaway. Plenty of room for 6 adults and just a 50 minute drive and 10 minute water taxi ride from Sydney. I recommend hiring your own boat so you can explore the river and all it has to offer - but make sure you get a decent motor so you can explore the local towns and waterways. A wonderful time is guaranteed. "
