Binalong

Set amidst wooded hills on Burley Griffin Way, the tiny historic town of Binalong is 320 km south - west of Sydney and 37 km north-west of Yass, at an elevation of 470 metres.

The towns name is said to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning 'from a high place' - Binalong was home to the Nungawal people prior to European settlement in the early 1800's.

Australian bush range Johnny Gilbert's grave can be seen on the outskirts of town, where he was killed in 1865 during a gunfight.

Binalong influenced a number of poems written by famous
Australian poet Banjo Patterson's (eg:'The Bush Christening'), who moved to nearby 'Ilalong' station at the age of five.

Like many country towns, Binalong is enjoying a new lease of life as an attraction to visitors looking for a quiet, peaceful respite from city life.

Binalong is home to many artists and craftspeople with studios open to the public.
