The town of Young is situated in the south west region of southern New South Wales, Australia, 3 1/2 hours from Sydney, 2 hours from Canberra and 1 1/2 hours from Wagga Wagga. Nearby towns include Cootamundra, Harden and Temora all of which have interesting tourist attractions. Buildings remind the visitor of the early gold mining heritage. Come to enjoy some wonderful orchards, wineries. parks and of course our famous hospitality.
The town of Young is situated in the south west region of southern New South Wales. Even today you can pan for your own gold at Blackguard Gully with equipment hired from the Lambing Flat Museum.
Another site of historical significance where you can relax and soak up the history of Young is Chinaman's Dam. Pack a picnic lunch (ask us in advance for a gourmet picnic hamper) and appreciate the bird life which abounds together with the newly created waterfall made from natural stone by a local stonemason.
Enter the gardens through the gateway - a donation from Taronga Park Zoo where it was used for the Bicentennial Panda Exhibition.
Whilst these wonderful gardens are still in the development stage, they are certainly an attraction not to be missed, with bird life abounding.
Burrangong Creek and the wonderful parklands which surround it are at the heart of the town. This was the original area where gold was discovered so one can meander along the historic walk, absorbing the historic points along the way.
Information on these walks can be obtained from the Young Visitor Information Centre, adjacent to the creek.
During late November early December the whole district comes alive with the excitement of the National Cherry Festival and all its different activities for a ten (10) day time frame.
Events include the Big Breakfast, Heritage Day featuring sheep dog trials and amusements for the whole family followed by a retail market day, street parade and a Concert/Street Party.
A number of orchards and wineries produce local product with many roadside stalls showcasing jams, liquors, preserved fruits and cherry wine, as well as chocolate coated prunes and sauces, 'Pick your own Cherries' also.
Local restaurants, cafes and coffee shops produce delicious fare using locally grown produce and wines.
Wonderful nurseries abound with locally grown trees and shrubs, with one featuring a bird aviary, together with some magnificent open gardens in the area.
There are many creative artisans within the district and their wares are available from a number of local outlets.
