Tree Fern Lodge comprises two country style timber buildings joined by a covered verandah, set in rolling grassy hills at the edge of pristine rainforest.
The older of the two buildings is the sleeping wing. It was originally a beachside kiosk at Kiama, before being dismantled and rebuilt as the first part of Tree Fern Lodge. The hardwood timber used the frame and external walls and floors dates to the early 20th Century.
Inside this wing weve constructed three timber lined bedrooms linked by a central hallway. The main and second bedrooms have one queen size double bed in each, while the third bedroom has a bunk bed, standard double mattress on the lower level and a large single mattress on the top. All up there is sleeping space for seven people. There is a modest bathroom in this wing too (the main bathroom is in the other wing). All beds have electric blankets and room heaters, with doonas or blankets, as you prefer.
The newer building is the living wing. Its construction is similar to the sleeping wing, with timber external and internal walls, but weve made it open plan with a quarry tile floor.
It has a kitchen well equipped for cooking; an Italian all electric range with ceramic cooktop; fan forced multi-function oven; a microwave; a full range of utensils, cutlery and crockery; and pots and pans. There is a large bench for food preparation. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large timber dining table that will comfortably seat eight people.
At the opposite end of the living area there is a leather lounge suite comprising a three seater sofa and two armchairs. For entertainment we have TV, stereo with CD/DVD and tuner, plus a range of CDs and DVDs. We also have a collection of books for fireside and bedside reading.
At one end of the living room is the main bathroom and laundry. We have two large water tanks and plenty of rain to keep them full!
We call our house Tree Fern Lodge because of the abundant tree ferns on the property and in the nearby rainforest.
Our land totals about 12ha (30 acres), of which about 4ha is open rolling grassed fields, and the rest is high quality warm temperate rainforest. We are at 530m altitude, well above the coastal plain, which means we are always about 3-5C cooler than the coast. Great for winter fires and less oppressive than the coast in summer. Were also high enough to catch the cloud coming in from the sea, and often the associated rain, which means lush vegetation.
The open grassy fields are great for spotting wombats just before dusk (sometimes earlier if its overcast) and we have a big resident wombat population. Youll see the large burrows around. We also often see echidnas, and there are several wallabies (shy, and you may hear them more than see them).
Our bird population is large and very diverse. There are often rosellas near the house, but they are shy. We have a pair of spectacular king parrots that often visit and these can be hand fed if you are careful (we provide native bird seed for this purpose). Theres a bird book in the house to help identify the many birds you will see. If you stand on the verandah at night near a light you will also see, or more likely glimpse, the tiny insect eating bats that fly at high speed near the lights catching insects.
Because we maintain the property as a nature reserve and we want to keep the abundant wildlife happy, we dont allow pets of any kind at Tree Fern Lodge.
And what of the vegetation? We have abundant rainforest, and several seasonal garden areas. The perennial garden is at its peak in January. A walk around the property is a good constitutional!
