Eating Out: Enjoy Patongas latest addition the beautiful tavern. Perfect for breakfast and long lunches on the deck overlooking the Hawkesbury. Built from recycled timbers and the original Americas Cup Bar now restored and adorned with local history photographs and artwork of local fishermen by resident artists. If you like someting more low key, then try the famous Fish & Chips from the Patonga Beach takeaway. Get in early on weekends, people come from everywhere just to try them!
What to do: The Tony Doyle lookout, this is a great walk from Patonga. Start at the end of the beach near Dark Corner (facing the ferry jetty, walk left down the beach). A sign shows the beginning of the track. The track winds uphill quite quickly and provides great views of Patonga framed through the trees. Keep watch for the wildflowers - especially in spring. Higher up there are a number of spectacular lookouts from rock platforms. Take a picnic and enjoy your meal looking over the wide expanse of Broken Bay. The lookout is signposted & is a fenced lookout. While on this walk we have seen many birds, occasional koalas, up close sea eagles and lizards out sunning on the rocks. The track eventually leads down to Pearl Beach, or you can retrace your steps back to Patonga with a visit to the general store for a well-earned ice cream. Or just walk along the beach.
Patonga is a small secluded place to escape. It is a pristine stretch of sand at the mouth of the Hawkesbury where the river meets Broken Bay, Pittwater, Brisbane Waters and the Pacific Ocean. Truly boating paradise. Try your luck at wharf, beach & creek fishing, or canoeing up the protected creek between towering sandstone cliffs, or relaxing on a day ferry trip to Palm Beach or Bobbin Head and Cottage Point (dogs are permitted on the ferry), maybe you would like dipping into the sparkling shallows between the sandbanks, cycling around the town or taking on the challenge of The Hill, trekking along the Great North Walk admiring the local wildflowers and birdlife, or just relaxing. Tennis courts are available for hire at local camping ground. Weekend markets, surf beach and cinema close by. Kayak hire is also available at Pearl Beach. It is all here!
The local store & seafood shop can provide most of your needs. There is a new state of the art kids playground & basketball rings at the camping ground that will keep the kids amused for hours, sit under the shaddy trees & enjoy the view while they play.
Local Attractions: Patonga Beach curves round in a large arc & is a great walk. Follow the high tide mark & see the amazing variety of shells left by the tide. Watch the fishing boats in the bay. During the week you will see the professional boats at work, & on weekends a myriad of smaller boats can be seen trying their luck. There are always many many birds around. Pelicans fishing and hoping for treats from the fisherman, diving birds moving at spectacular speeds during their dives into the ocean, various hawks & eagles & the battles they wage against each other in the sky, parrots screeching and careening around. Recently, dolphins were frolicking at the creek mouth. If you have access to the other side of the creek, walking around the rocks (choose low tide) is lots of fun. There is also a secluded & sheltered sandy beach. You can almost always find a spot at Patonga which feels like the beach belongs just to you.
Evening Entertainment: Weekly live music at the Patonga Tavern. Bingo & other activities run by the Patonga Progress Assoc. as advertised on the local bulletin board.
