In Balmain the houses are usually small weatherboard cottages but on Jane Street, 2 minutes from busy Darling Street there are a few spectacular heritage listed houses. This house is one of them. On the ground floor of this two storey mansion there is a formal dining room with a table that sits 10 people, a lounge room, a large modern kitchen, a summer kitchen, a small bathroom and an internal laundry. All furnished with Australian cedar antique furniture. There are three large bedrooms on the second floor, two with double beds and a third with a double bed which can be divided into two singles. On that level it also has a large modern bathroom. There are huge verandas on both levels, with a large gas BBQ for entertaining. You could also sit in the cosy courtyard sipping white wine and it is so quiet that you will not believe you are so close to everything. It has TV, DVD player, gas burners and electric oven, large combined fridge and freezer, microwave. Bedding, linen and basic condiments are also provided. Behind the house, with its own separate entry from the laneway, there is a new one bedroom apartment with a large bedroom with a queen size bed, reverse cycle air-conditioning, a well appointed kitchen, a nice lounge opening onto a courtyard, and a modern bathroom.
You can book the house alone or the apartment or combined the two. It suits 8 people.
Wireless internet available
The house is 2 minutes walk to the main street of Balmain with its busy cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops. It is also within walking distance to the waterfront, Dawn Fraser swimming pool and numerous parks.
Balmain is a peninsula west of the Sydney's city centre. It is only ten minute bus ride across the Anzac Bridge from the centre of town or you can take a pleasant ride on the ferry from Circular Quay. A public bus runs from the ferry to the centre of Balmain, which is crammed with shops you would expect to find in a village. It also has a string of restaurants, cafes and pubs along with a couple of old churches and a handful of restored historic buildings. Balmain was originally a working class suburb with a handful of wealthy merchants and industrialists. Its main industry was shipbuilding and repairs which flourished about the beginning of the 1900s. In the sixties Balmain was 'invaded' by Bohemian types - mainly writers, artists and academics who preferred the more relaxed character of the place than the eastern suburbs. Balmain has a very long main street (Darling Street) which starts at a ferry wharf with regular services to Circular Quay. Arriving from the city, a left turn and a short walk will find you in the Illoura Reserve at Peacock Point, a pleasant spot with views back to the city and the Harbour Bridge.
There is a Saturday old wares and craft market in the grounds of a disused church where you might find the occasional treasure. But Balmain's main attraction is its atmosphere and pubs and cafes, and the chance for some people-watching in a laid-back environment. Several pubs have music on weekends and serve meals. It is surrounded by water and the perfect location to enjoy the famed Sydney lifestyle.
