Treat yourselves to a special break in the heart of the North Eastern Victoria. Explore the 50 acres of bushland, feed the alpaca's or simply sit by the pool or lie in the hamock under the canopy provided by 50 year old apple trees. Day trips can include Pizzini Winery in the King Valley or Miliwa's Gourmet precinct including Brown Brothers Epicure to select a wine to enjoy with your recently purchased Milawa cheese. You are truely secluded on this 100 acre farmlet. The children will delight in the open space.
A large spacious house framed with a 7 foot high hedge on one side and a pinetree enlcosed paddock on the other.
Settle in and enjoy the quite or explore the rivers, ride the rail trail or visit those the producers of epicurian delights.
Are there animals on the farm?
Yes, Misc. Cows and calves and one rather Shaggy Bull with an impressive set of horns, (do not go into his paddock) some very cute Alpacas and their young.
Golden rule in the country – leave gates as you found them (closing a gate that you found open may well shut animals away from their water supply, or failing to close a shut gate behind you can allow animals to wander).
Do we need to do anything to help with them?
The Alpaca's will eat the food from the blue bucket (this can be found in the blue container in the large shed with tractor) if you place in a container and shake they should hear the noise and expect food.
Are we allowed to go near them?
Well….I wouldn’t try the Bull, Alpaca’s will follow you (single file) across the paddock. They will chase your dog, so use a lead whilst around the animals. Also Alpacas may spit if so inclined (should this happen you will appreciate a shower).
Is there any water suitable for fishing nearby? (we will bring our boat if there is).
Lake Nillacoutie on the Midland Highway is approx 45 mins away. There are BBQ facilities (wood fire – take newspaper, kindling and some wood (there should be wood available – but be prepared), toilets, change rooms and an area for swimming. If you fancy travelling further afield – Lake William Hovell is lovely and Yackandanda has a lovely lake - quiet and surrounded by bush - not available for boating.
Can we pitch a tent in the garden for the children to sleep in?
The garden is a most suitable place for the children to camp, with many lovely old apple trees providing shade and shelter. If the weather is warmer - check tents for any wandering wildlife including snakes (all jokes aside, ensure that the fly net is always kept closed).
Do you recommend bringing all our food with us?
Yes this would be advisable.
How far to the nearest supermarket/shop?
Benalla is closest at 28 km, with Wangaratta 34 km. We suggest that you check out BenallaOnLine.com which is a comprehensive guide to Benalla. There is an unsecured wireless ADSL connection in the house.
We will clean the house before we leave, so do we need to bring cleaning products?
No these will be available and located in the Laundry. We choose Green products to protect the environment and prevent any irritation to visitors who may have allergies. We have a cleaner come to do a change over - so leave beds as they are, the cleaner will strip and remake.
Are there any special house rules that we should know?
We have wireless broadband internet.
I would prefer all meals be eaten at the dining table or outside, if flies permit ( I have a high chair) – adults are welcome to enjoy Wine/Cheese/Dips/Biscuits in the comfort of the lounge.
The wooden floor becomes treacherous when wet – make sure kids are dry before coming inside.
Is there a pub or casual dining place that you can recommend in case we decide to go out for dinner one of the nights?
BenallaOnLine.com lists dining places. We find that Tutta Bella in Bridge St is good for a casual night out. For lunch we suggest the Benalla Art Gallery – sitting out on the verandah overlooking the lake is lovely especially in Spring. Or the Tatong Pub for lunch or dinner, alternatively if you look online you will find that Brown Brothers' and the King Valley wineries are about 30 minutes away.
Milawa Gourmet Region is about a half hour drive - head to Wangaratta - turn off at Road Sign "Milawa Gourmet Food Region"
For a fun night out – why not take a step back in time and try the Swanpool Cinema Midland Highway, (approx 30 mins drive) check out the program - usually a double feature - on SwanpoolCinema.com. Take your own mugs for half price coffee/tea. Ice Creams, soft drinks and light refreshments available both before show and at interval. Hot food (pasties type take away) available at interval - order before the show.
Where is the nearest hospital with Emergency Dept in case one of the kids breaks their arm!?
Wangaratta Hospital is the best choice, as they have an outpatient’s department with all the facilities needed. Their phone number is , Northeast Health Wangaratta's main entrance is located in Green Street.
The hospital address 35-47 Green Street, Wangaratta
Is there mobile reception ?
Not at the house – text does make it through! There is a landline and mobile reception is available 1.5k toward Wangaratta at the primary school.
Looking out across the back yard through the apple trees, 2 fences to the right about 100 metres, the small shed across the paddock is just on the other side of the boundary and looking to the left to the end of the pine tree paddock about 200 metres. Looking straight ahead to the top of the hill and through the bush paddock to the end. There is a bike track in the bush needs sweeping to find so probably best that it is a walking track at this point. There is also a small lean-to and barbecue at the top of the hill.
