Description

Kallarroo Cottage offers a chance to explore a particularly beautiful corner of the Monaro, the high country region of southeast New South Wales. Set on a 1000 acre sheep and cattle property with sweeping views down a valley, the cottage is a self-contained log cabin fitted out in the rustic elegance style of a fishing or ski lodge.

Kallarroo Cottage is located in the coastal Kydra Range of mountains, with three kilometres of frontage on the Kydra River. It is near the historic village of Nimmitabel, roughly half way between the magnificent beaches of the NSW far south coast and the ski fields and fishing spots of the Snowy Mountains. It is two hours' drive from Canberra, 45 minutes from Cooma, and about an hour and a quarter from either Merimbula or Jindabyne. (Click on MAP for orientation.)

Recently renovated, Kallarroo Cottage features a high wooden panel ceiling, a new kitchen, a barbecue terrace, and all modern appliances.

The ground floor comprises a large open plan kitchen/dining room, and a comfortable lounge room with an open fireplace. The mezzanine floor has a master bedroom, and a cozy second bedroom particularly attractive for children.

The property includes open farm land, tall old growth native forest, and streams.

Kallarroo Cottage is available for rent as self-catering holiday accommodation, for up to six people. (Kallarroo now also separately offers a much larger, grand homestead for holiday rental, suitable for bigger groups of guests - see below or go to www.stayz.com.au/65328.)

The minimum weekend stay is two nights, and three nights during the week. Rentals of a week or more attract a discounted rate.

Ecotourism - Native wildlife and bushwalking

With 1000 acres of rolling grazing country, native old-growth forest, and streams, Kallarroo is perfect for anything from a gentle stroll to a serious bushwalk.

Trails are marked on a map, which is illustrated in the photo section on this site, above.

It's the luck of the game with wild animals, but with any chance visitors should be able over a couple of days to see the platypus family who live and play in the creek.

There are cute echidnas - the spiny anteaters, to be seen here and there.

The birds include a range of colourful parrot species.

Then there are untold numbers of wombats, kangaroos, and wallabies, plus the paying residents, of course - sheep and cattle.

ALSO AVAILABLE - KALLARROO HOMESTEAD. VISIT www.stayz.com.au/65328.

Apart from the Cottage, Kallarroo now also offers the Homestead for holiday rental. The Homestead, a very large stone and log house recently renovated in the same style of rustic elegance, is suitable for bigger parties.

The Homestead has its own Stayz website, where full pricing details, descriptions, availability, and options for bookings and inquiries can be found. Visit the Stayz website under the heading "Kallarroo Homestead and Cottage" at www.stayz.com.au/65328.

  • "What a wonderful place to stay. The cottage was rustic in a comfortable country way, which we all enjoyed, especially the children in their loft room. The open fire and the flickering of the light enticed us to want to for good. The ever changing mountain was fantastic, from the warm days to the blustering snowing morning. OUr 2 children 3 & 5, were constantly entertained by the whole experience. Thank you Kallaroo, we will be back."
    Dale, October 2010

  • "A fabulous place!! The setting is terrific - great views, wonderful walks from river's edge to old growth forest to rocky outcrops. Lots of wildlife - birds, wombats, roos. The outside world really disappears when you're at Kallarroo. Add to that a very cosy and well appointed cottage and an excellent host - we will most definitely be back. Thanks for an excellent weekend."
