Where we are

Less than two hours from Sydney and 90 minutes from Newcastle the Broke Fordwich area is in the southwest corner of the mid Hunter Valley. Sitting between Pokolbin and Wollombi, Broke played a critical role in the development and history of NSW.

Next door to boutique vineyards and near the olive farms of Broke , 15-20 minutes to the heart or Pokolbin for the best wine tasting and restaurants in NSW and for the golf enthusiasts, two of the best and most challenging golf courses in Australia (the Vintage and Cypress Lakes).

Broke Village stands at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges on the Wollombi Brook. The massive Yellow Rock escarpment stands guard above. The Ranges shelter Broke Fordwich from much of the rainfall that surrounding districts receive. The area has a sandy loam with river flat alluvial soil, volcanic soil and pockets of red basalt giving wine producers a variety of soil types known as terra rossa.

Today Broke Fordwich is still making history. In 1994 it was the first area formally recognised as a separate viticulture. Whilst historically, it is one of the oldest wine growing areas in Australia, it is only in the last 30 years that Broke Fordwich has started to become an important player in the Australian industry.

Today, more than a quarter of the Hunters wine grape production now comes from the area and Broke Fordwich wines are winning more than their fair share of national and international awards.

Importantly, Broke Fordwich retains its integrity as a rural community remaining free of large scale development yet offering first class B&B and self catering accommodation, restaurants and activities. Visitors to the area are surprised by the amount of wildlife they see. It’s rare to visit the area without seeing kangaroos, wombats and a huge range of birds.

There is plenty to do.

How about a visit to the award winning Hunter Valley Gardens. Why not try Aqua Golf or treat yourself to a wonderful facial or massage in one of the lovely day spas. Fancy some horse riding or a visit to a Macadamia nut farm or Alpaca Farm. How about a visit to the chocolate or cheese factory or to the Blue Tongue Brewery? There are hundreds of great vineyards in the Hunter with great cellar doors and fantastic restaurants. Some of the best vineyards are on your doorstep. These include Margan Family Wines, Cockfighters Ghost Vineyard, Hope Estate, Stomp Wines , Broke Estate, Pooles Rock, Mt Broke, Catherine Vale,Brokes Promise,Krinklewood, Tinonee, Elysium, and Nightingale Wines. There are also some wonderful Olive Groves where you can taste the local olives and oils. Or just sit back with a glass of your favorite wine and let the world go by.

  • "Many thanks for the use of Cicada House this weekend. The house is perfect& the setting stunning. Everything that we needed was provided for & the hot tub was a huge added bonus. I'd very much recommend Cicada Country House to friends/family & have every intention of staying there again. "

  • "Thanks for our wonderful 2 day break. The house was perfect, great beds, linen and comfort. We loved the huge kitchen and dining area and the number of comfy lounges for all. We particularly enjoyed the spa and even though we froze to death at the concert in December the fireplace was fantastic to have in our winter like summer! Mum and Dad loved the main bedroom with huge ensuite and great views! Very luxurious bathroom products and welcome basket add that final touch. Would highly recommend your house to anyone who would like to stay on the peaceful side of the hunter valley. Our party ranged in ages from 18 to 77 and everyone was catered for from toasting marshmallows and pink fizzy wine ( 18 year olds) to great cheese and shiraz for us more mature types. Thanks again "

  • "Our new secret 7 hideout was magnificient. From the cold champagne on arrival, to the heated spa, to the candles and cushions for our paddock picnic and the "insider" knowledge you shared with us. We had an amazing time of friendship, bonding, eating, dancing and adventure. Thank you we will be back. "

  • "Thank you for the opportunity to stay at Cicada, we are just so refreshed and relaxed. We danced to tragic music from our high school days, its funny how a room full of people can often be boring but 6 friends can make for the best time. If the kangaroos were watching they would have thought us crazy, we shared the cooking, we got a little sun on the deck, the fire was perfect as the temperature dropped Friday and Sunday night. Friday night there were only 2 of us, so nice and relaxing Saturday night and Sunday lunch our celebration meals and as all good 40 somethings by 8pm Sunday night we had hit the tim tams watching the TV in front of the fire. Thank you again "

  • ""All us eleven girls had a great GREAT weekend away. We felt at home as soon as we walked in. The hospitality was fantastic and couldn't off asked for anything more. It was everything and more :) Highly recommend this for anyone to stay in as it will be a memorable experience. It's peaceful, relaxing, great view and not far from wineries, shops etc. We hope to come back again next year for another girls weekend away. Great work Colette and Mike you should be very happy with yourselves, you have done such a great job. Highly recommended. See you again next time, we look forward to it."

  • "First let me say thankyou for a wonderful and relaxing weekend. We had no complaints, it was just what 11 tired mum's needed to recharge. We saw Kangaroo's, enjoyed evenings by the fire and just had a great time. I would have no hesitation in recommending your accomodation to anyone. I found the house on Stayz.com and fell in love with it. The pictures on the website are exactly how the house it. It was warm and inviting and as we entered it on the first day we were greeted by a lovely aroma about the house, not sure what oil it was but it made us feel at home. Thanks again. "

  • "We loved it, the view was magic and the accommodation was so comfortable and had everything we could possibly need for the lovely weekend. Colette went the extra mile for us by shuttling up and back to the general store for the Lovedale Long Lunch which was a great help as one of our party was still recovering from knee surgery. Having used Stays in the Vines for the 3rd time now I would continue to recommend to friends, each experience has been unique but equally amazing and I know we will definitely use you again when we visit Broke/ The Hunter Valley."

  • "The Cicada house was more than I expected, the house was exceptional in every way! Your backyard is pure heaven having views of the mountains and we even spotted a few kangaroos was so amazing. The beds were super comfortable I loved the open plan, the furniture and the appliances. Also was great to be able to have the glass doors open to the outside dining/entertainment area so we could chat listen to music and enjoy! Ben Sanger was a champion! He was our chef for the evening on the Friday night (arrival night) and he was fantastic. Lovely knowledgeable and patient.. He was happy to wait a few minutes for later arrivals and the food was exquisite. Well done Ben, all in all very happy with everything and Colette - you are wonderful and such an amazing help and full of great suggestions so thank you very much I will be in contact when I head back to The Hunter Valley...And so will the other guests ALL were very HAPPY!! • "You could have done nothing more to make us feel more comfortable and welcome. All the information you provided before and during our stay made everything easy. Having dinner cooked for us by Ben and Jas was such a delicious treat. It made the decision making easy. All done before we arrived. Cicada House is beautiful and comfortable. We were all able to sit together and chat in the lounge and eat together at that enormous dining table. Our weekend was just a delight and Sting WOW! "
