“Romantic at heart”
Keeping the flame of romance alive can be a battle for overworked couples. Slipping away for a quiet weekend together may be just the spark that’s needed, especially if you don’t have to drive for hours to get there.
Mountain Jewel, just over an hour’s drive from Sydney, makes a perfect weekend (or midweek) getaway. Set on 13 acres of land that merges into the bush of the surrounding national park, accommodation is provided in three themed suites – the French Bordello, the Heritage, and the Honeymoon – as well as a private two-storey cottage with two queen-size bedrooms.
Hosts Warwick and Betty are on hand to advise on local restaurants, bushwalks, and other attractions in the area. They’ll even collect you from the station if you arrive by train.
Betty, a chef by profession, will turn on a feast for guests of any dietary persuasion (weight watchers included). Breakfast is a “wide-open menu” and is served in the dining room, which has expansive views across the valley to Mt Tomah. Delicious afternoon teas will be served in the suites if requested, as will special-occasion candlelit dinners.
The suites have king-size four-poster beds with romantically draped canopies and mirrored ceilings (in the French Bordello and the Heritage suites), two-person spas, kitchenettes, TV/VCR/DVD/CD players, and fresh flowers. In the more spacious Honeymoon suite, the living/dining area has an open fire. The suites, rated 5 star, are luxuriously furnished with antiques, some of which came from England in the 1920s.
Within the four acres of rambling gardens are fountains, a landscaped swimming pool, a gazebo, and lawns large enough to accommodate a wedding marquee. Bushwalks from the back gate wind down into the valley through mag-nificent blue gums. Norman Lindsay’s former house and gardens are a stone’s throw from Mountain Jewel and well worth a visit, as are the nearby mountain villages with their cosy eateries, galleries, markets, open gardens, and scenic beauty.
There are two queen bedrooms, kitchen, lounge-dining room with log fire and gas heating upstairs, while downstairs there is another lounge area, laundry, shower and toilet.
The tariff includes food supplies for your convenience and if there is anything special you require Betty and Warwick are pleased to assist you.
Everything you will need is right there for you to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and views of the mountain and valley below.
