The former beachhouse of the famed Australian painter Arthur Boyd and his family, this architect-designed cottage is absolute oceanfront - perched on the sand dunes above Culburra Beach among beautiful native vegetation.
Bought by the present owner from Yvonne Boyd in 2003, the property has been renovated and redecorated, with updated kitchen and bathroom and quality fixtures and furnishings throughout.
The multi-level design, with decks off many of the rooms provide private escapes if the house is fully occupied and protection from the elements, no matter what the weather brings. You can relax and enjoy a late afternoon drink on the painting platform built by Boyd, with incredible views north across the whole of Shoalhaven Bight.
Just over two hours south of Sydney, this property also has easy access to local shops and services, with Jervis Bays pristine forests, beaches and national parks at your doorstep.
During the colder months, the fireplace is waiting for your arrival - just add a match!
Culburra is a genuine timewarp seaside holiday town south of Sydney. It is a wonderfully sleepy village where women mow their front lawns in bikinis, families walk to the protected beach at Tilbury Cove for a quick dip, most of the houses are made from fibro or timber, and food choices are limited to the Chinese at the Bowling Club, fish, chips, burgers, pizzas and bakery from the local takeaways, or a barbecue or picnic.
Culburra is about enjoying the scenery and having a lazy day beside the sea. The choices are truly delightful. Drive into town, pass the shopping centre, and turn left off Penguin Head Road into Ocean Street. This will take you to two parking areas above Culburra Beach near Tilbury Cove. This is a near-perfect family beach because it is protected from both the southerly swell and southerly breezes. Further around Tilbury Cove is Tilbury Reserve, an excellent small park with a modern childrens play area, barbecues and fine views north towards Mount Coolangatta.
Beyond Tilbury Reserve, at the end of Penguin Head Road, are a number of lookouts with excellent views up and down the coast. Return on Penguin Head Road and veer left into Eastbourne Avenue, which leads to Warrain Beach, an excellent surfing beach patrolled by the Nowra Culburra surf club.
The beach also has access to the rock platform around the base of Penguin Head. Beyond the beach, Eastbourne Avenue curves around to Lake Wollumboola where there is a quiet park. Access to the lake is easy and the lakes foreshores are particularly beautiful and unspoilt.
Culburra Beach quote from: Bruce Elder, Excursion Culburra, The Sydney Morning Herald, Spectrum, May 14-15, 2005, p. 29.
Dolphin Watch Cruises
Dolphin Watch Cruises operates on the pristine waters of the Jervis Bay Marine Park. The Marine Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty with white sandy beaches, towering sandstone cliffs and sparkling blue waters which features an abundance of wildlife including dolphins, seals, whales (June to November) sea eagles, penguins and gannets. Dolphin Watch Cruises is one of the leading tourist attractions in the Jervis Bay area and has been a frequent NSW and South Coast Tourism Award Winner.
Arthur Boyds Bundanon
Its only a 20 minute drive to historic Bundanon, a gift to Australia by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd. The National Estate listed Bundanon is located at Illaroo Road, West Cambewarra (via Nowra). Bundanon is open to the public every Sunday for guided tours of the 1860s homestead and Arthur Boyds studio. Its a great place to also bring a picnic and enjoy a river or bush walk on the spectacular Shoalhaven River.
