Description
Currawong is a modern and spacious self contained holiday home in a secluded location on the outskirts of Penneshaw. The property provides stunning sea views over Backstairs Passage from its elevated location - across to the mainland, ferry terminal & township. It also has views of the surrounding hills & countryside. The house is only1 km from the town, the ferry terminal, a beautiful safe swimming beach and the Penguin Centre that is certainly worth visiting in the early evenings.
Currawong is only a few minutes walk (to the east) to the recently proclaimed Baudin Conservation Park, where there are displays on the early history of Penneshaw. If you are lucky you may even have a sighting of the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. On a quiet evening walk in the Park, you will encounter large numbers of Tammar wallabies.
Currawong exudes a peaceful & relaxing atmosphere & is a great place to return to in the evenings after exploring this wonderful island. It is an ideal place for honeymooners, romantic retreats, family holidays, group get-togethers and more.
The house features four bedrooms:
Main bedroom has a queen size bed plus a sofa bed.
Second bedroom has a queen size bed.
Third bedroom has a double bed.
Large fourth bedroom (downstairs) has 1 queen size bed and 2 single beds.
Port-a-cot and highchair available on request.
The open-plan spacious living area has:
- spectacular views and a reverse cycle air conditioning, ceiling fan, cosy slow combustion wood heater (wood supplied),
- large HD digital TV & blu-ray DVD player, CD player, binoculars, books and games
- Telephone available for emergency calls & local calls only.
The modern well equipped kitchen has a gas cooktop, electric oven, dishwasher, large refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, and a walk-in pantry. A highchair is also available on request.
There are 2 bathrooms (with toilets) + an extra toilet closet. One of the bathrooms is very spacious (to accommodate a wheelchair) & it has a spa bath, separate shower (with a hand rail), shower chair, toilet, hair dryer and the second bathroom has a shower, toilet & basin. Also the third separate toilet has rails.
Laundry includes washing machine, trough, clothes dryer, iron & ironing board and a chest freezer for your catch & bait. There is a fish cleaning table at the back of the shed.
The patio has a hooded gas BBQ and an outdoor deck setting for wining and dining. Relax & enjoy the spectacular views - watch the ferry come & go, the night lights from the town & jetty reflected in the sea - a truely awsome sight, & the attractive bush garden with abundant bird life & wallabies that visit in the evenings.
The house is disabled friendly with wheelchair access, shower chair, shower & toilet rails, wide entrances, acceptable vanity height for wheelchairs.
There is secure undercover parking for a car and a boat trailer.
Pets negotiable with owner.
Penneshaw has a supermarket, post office, community centre with internet available, restaurants, cafes, service station and a refurbished country-style hotel. There is a safe swimming beach, plentiful wildlife, walking trails in the Conservation Park, views of the ruggged cliffs, art galleries, museum, cellar doors, golf and tennis.

“Currawong” is a solid brick, modern open-planned holiday home, situated in a secluded location on the eastern side of the town of Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. It is 1.3 km from the ferry terminal. The house has an elevated position providing stunning sea views across Backstairs Passage to the SA mainland and also great views of the township and bushland areas.
The house features four bedrooms – 3 upstairs on the main living level and 1 downstairs:
- Upstairs there are two large bedrooms with queen size beds and a smaller third bedroom with a double bed. The sofa bed is in the main bedroom. The large main bathroom has a spa bath, separate shower and toilet. There is also a second toilet on this level.
- Downstairs there is one large bedroom with a queen size bed and 2 (or 3 if necessary) single beds. The second bathroom (including a toilet) is also located downstairs.
There is a modern well-appointed kitchen including a dishwasher & microwave oven and walk-in pantry.
The open-plan dining/living area exudes a peaceful and restful atmosphere, and features reverse cycle air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a cosy slow combustion wood fire and fantastic sea views overlooking the bush garden.
A wide protected deck and hooded gas BBQ provide an ideal setting for outdoor dining.
The house is just a two minute drive to a superb safe swimming beach, while a walk of a few hundred metres in the other direction will take the visitor into a bushland area, (Baudin Conservation Park) where Tammar wallabies will be seen in large numbers at dusk. An added attraction of the area is the abundant birdlife (including sightings of the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo).
The township of Penneshaw has many amenities including a Service Station,
Supermarket, Hotel, Restaurants, Cafes, Tourist Information Centre, Post Office with an internet service, Sealink Ferry Office and much more. It is a short distance to Art Centres & Wine Cellars as well as many spectacular sight-seeing places. Currawong is a great base to return to after a day touring the island.
