Description

AMAZING!
Welcome to Swanhaven and your 1960s holiday home, Burrawirrai. We were told that this Aboriginal name means 'by the water'. Swan Lake is across the road - only 30 metres away - with easy access to private sandy beaches, good fishing and very safe (predator-free!) swimming. Take a short walk to the end of Lake Drive where you can enjoy Swanhaven's picturesque recreation area with picnic tables, barbeques and a bike track to the next township of Cudmirrah.

Burrawirrai accommodates up to eight guests in two bedrooms, a small bunkbed room and a backyard teenage retreat/sleepout. In addition, quality bed linen is provided on request. The bathroom has plenty of hanging space for beach towels, and includes both a shower and tub. The lounge and dining rooms create a fantastic communal area with bush and lake views. At the end of the day, Swanhaven's sunset will calm the most frazzled nerves!

Set on a spacious corner block with native gardens and a huge four metre deep verandah, Burrawirrai faces National Park to the north and pristine Swan Lake to the west - only a stone's throw away.

Be charmed by quirky retro pieces, relaxed furnishings and perhaps a visit from one of our resident possums or kangaroos.

The South Coast awaits you at Burrawirrai.

Getting There

We are a scenic two and a half hour road trip from Sydney. Turn off the Princes Highway to go to Sussex Inlet, drive about ten kilometres then, before reaching Sussex Township, turn right into The Springs Road. After about three kilometres, turn right into Hoffman Drive. Continue for 150 metres and we are on the corner, in Lake Drive.

Time for ...

Swimming - The lake is suitable for young children who like to paddle. The water is shallow and so clean that the visibility is astonishing.

Kayaking, sailing and windsurfing - The lake is safe enough to explore for hours. It is an enclosed waterway and only opens to the sea every three years or so. This makes for relatively predictable conditions.

Waterskiing - There is a deeper part of the lake which lends itself to motorised water sports.

Cycling - Whether on road, off road or along designated cycle tracks, cycling is the way to go.

Watching a movie - There is a quaint cinema in the main road of Sussex Inlet, only five minutes by car.

Visiting the Club - There are RSL and Bowling Clubs in Sussex Township. Courtesy buses pick-up and drop-off in Swanhaven.

Going to the Beach - Berrara Beach is only a few minutes drive down the road. If you're feeling energetic, walk south for fifteen minutes to Cudmirrah Beach.

Taking a drive to Milton - The place is full of curio shops, excellent cafes and award winning restaurants.

  • "Loved this place! Perfect for the price - comfortable, thoughtfully appointed, nice furniture, lovely atmosphere and simple but funky beachhouse style. The location is gorgeous and peaceful, perfect lakeside location for kids, and we really appreciated having canoes to use. Highly recommended. (Just a tip - if you're going in cooler months, take thick socks or slippers for inside - heater is great and makes the house cosy, but the floor can be cold on the feet). "

  • "We had a fabulous long weekend at Swan Haven and would thoroughly recommend Burrawirrai for a comfortable, relaxed family holiday. The house is cosy and well equipped, and the setting is stunning. Nothing beats having a bbq on the big covered verandah on a warm evening with the sound of swans on the lake in the background. We also made great use of the kayak and canoe - with only the swans to share the lake with in the mornings - absolutely magic! There is so much to see and do locally, that the exploring cut into my hammock time! And I just love that when you're feeling too relaxed to cook the Sussex Inlet RSL courtesy bus will collect and deliver you to the doorstep - what more could you ask for! We'll definitely be back."

  • "Beautiful warm & cosy house on a rainy night and a wonderful lake house on a warm Spring day! It's the best of both worlds. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Swanhaven & surrounds is such a picturesque place to visit. So relaxing & serene. Highly recommended. Thankyou so much Lisa. From Tracy, Nathan, Natasha & Tahlia."

  • "I've rented a cottage 'Burrawirrai', in a small village, it is surrounded by trees and beside a lake. Each morning I wake to the early morning bird chorus and after a coffee and breakfast of muesli yoghurt and fresh strawberries, I take a short walk to the little secluded beach, where I can sit in dappled sunlight, or go for a walk, or best of all, cool off in the pristine waters of 'Swan Lake'. The village is 'Swanhaven', named I presume after the black swans that nest here. Actually, I look up and I can see them. Mother Father and six young ones all in a row, swimming to the other side of the lake. It's a warm morning with a slight cool breeze coming off the water. It is so peaceful, not a soul in sight. I must go home tomorrow so I'm making the most of it. I'll stay til lunch time, it'll be getting a bit hot by then, and then walk back up to the cottage for a nice champagne lunch, and read a book for the afternoon. Just as I am sitting writing, a drake and it's mate flew down and swam in close, a pity I didn't bring any food with me... They soon got bored with me and swam off. It has warmed up a bit so I'll go for a swim now. Thank you, Lisa and Max, for a wonderful relaxing stay. Barbara "

  • "We had a fantastic stay at the Burrawirrai house! The owner went out of her way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The photos on this website don't actually do the house justice. We spent our days swimming, fishing, kayaking, bush walking, or just lazing around at either the lake or one of the many beaches in the area. We are planning on returning to the house later this year."

  • "We were very honoured to be the first quests of the newly listed property. We were given a complete tour by the very gracious and generous owner. The property is very comfortable with a mixture of modern, retro and chic decor. The house is fully stocked with every appliance, tableware and kitchen accessory that you could possible need on your stay here. The property is across the road from Swanlake with easy access to the water which is a great swimming area (especially if you have little ones). There is a nature reserve on the other side (great for a game of cricket or footy) and not far from a small kids play ground. The covered verandah area is great for sunset "drinkies" and listening to the sounds of "serenity". We felt totally relaxed after our overnight stay. Would we go back? Definitely. Thank you Burrawirrai!"
