Where is Bonn Abbey and Maranda & What is there to do

Less than two hours from Sydney and 90 minutes from Newcastle the Broke Fordwich area is in the southwest corner of the mid Hunter Valley. Sitting between Pokolbin and Wollombi, Broke played a critical role in the development and history of NSW.

Minutes from the boutique vineyards and olive farms of Broke , 15 minutes to the heart or Pokolbin for the best wine tasting and restaurants in NSW and for the golf enthusiasts, two of the best and challenging golf courses in Australia (the Vintage and Cypress Lakes).

Broke Village stands at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges on the Wollombi Brook. The massive Yellow Rock escarpment stands guard above. The Ranges shelter Broke Fordwich from much of the rainfall that surrounding districts receive. The area has a sandy loam with river flat alluvial soil, volcanic soil and pockets of red basalt giving wine producers a variety of soil types known as terra rossa.

Today Broke Fordwich is still making history. In 1994 it was the first area formally recognised as a separate viticultural. The village of Broke is at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges on the Wollombi Brook. While, historically, it is one of the oldest wine growing areas in Australia, it is only in the last 30 years that Broke Fordwich has started to become an important player in the Australian industry.

Today, more than a quarter of the Hunters wine grape production now comes from the area and Broke Fordwich wines are winning more than their fair share of national and international awards.

Importantly, Broke Fordwich retains its integrity as a rural community remaining free of large scale development yet offering first class B&B and self catering accommodation, restaurants and activities. Visitors to the area are surprised by the amount of wildlife they see. Its rare to visit the area without seeing kangaroos, wombats and a huge range of birds.

There is plenty to do.

How about a visit to the award winning Hunter Valley Gardens. Why not try Aqua Golf or treat yourself to a wonderful facial or massage in one of the lovely day spas. Fancy some horse riding or a visit to a Macadamia nut farm or Alpaca Farm. How about a visit to the chocolate or cheese factory or to the Blue Tongue Brewery. There are hundreds of great vineyards in the Hunter with great cellar doors and fantastic restaurants. Some of the best vineyards are on your doorstep. These include Margan Family Wines, Cockfighters Ghost Vineyard, Hope Estate, Broke Fordwich Wine Co Pty Ltd, Beyond Broke, Broke Estate, Pooles Rock, Mt Broke, Catherine Vale, Bacchus Estate, Krinklewood, Tinonee, Elysium, Elsmore and Nightingale Wines. There are also some wonderful Olive Groves where you can taste the local olives and oils. Or just sit back with a glass of your favorite wine and let the world go by.

Guest Reviews
We had a lovely time at Bonn Abbey on the weekend.
The house is really practical and comfortable. The outside table and chairs were well used and we spent a lot of time out there. The kitchen is well equipped, and we had everything we needed.
The fire place and the spa bath were also great extras, and added to the experience.
We appreciated the little touches such as foil and cling wrap, coffee, and plenty of containers for our picnic. Having the linen was also a plus.
We definitely will come back and I would recommend Bonn Abbey to my friends.

Thank you

We absolutely fell in love with Bonn Abbey, it has plenty of charm. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend, and although frequent Hunter Valley visitors, we can't believe we have never visited the wineries at Broke.
Much recommended. Peaceful and fun filled weekend. We will definitely be back, if you will have us!

Thank you for an enjoyable 3 days!!
BONN ABBEY is a very well equipped house and its position allowed us to visit a section of the Hunter that is not usually covered. Everything that was mentioned was as advertised and the house was warm and inviting. It is a great venue for groups of people or families and I would recommend it to those needing a large house.
We mainly self catered as the rain was a good excuse to stay in and do very little other than relax.

This is the 2nd time I've stayed at Bonn Abbey. We loved our stay - the house is comfortable, open, cosy and clean with a lovely outlook (paddocks & sheep). We were up in the Hunter for a wedding and Bonn Abbey was right
in the middle of everything we needed - it was very convenient. The stay was made easy with linen, towels, coffee, tea, and general cleaning
products etc supplied. The owners were available for us to talk to and answer questions whenever
we needed them (in the lead up and during our stay). There was nothing they could have done to improve the stay. Will definately stay again

Hi,

We had an amazing time staying at Bonn Abbey and Maranda Country House. Our English visitors could not believe the scenery and we were so comfortable in both houses. The spa had good use and the lawn was a perfect cricket pitch! The houses were exemplery and we have no complaints whatsoever. Everyone had a fantastic time. I think the kangaroos were a highlight for the visitors! as well as all the great wine!
Thanks-you for everything and we will definately recommend the two houses for anyone else going to the Hunter Valley.
