Where is Bonn Abbey and Maranda & What is there to do

Less than two hours from Sydney and 90 minutes from Newcastle the Broke Fordwich area is in the southwest corner of the mid Hunter Valley. Sitting between Pokolbin and Wollombi, Broke played a critical role in the development and history of NSW.

Minutes from the boutique vineyards and olive farms of Broke , 15 minutes to the heart or Pokolbin for the best wine tasting and restaurants in NSW and for the golf enthusiasts, two of the best and challenging golf courses in Australia (the Vintage and Cypress Lakes).

Broke Village stands at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges on the Wollombi Brook. The massive Yellow Rock escarpment stands guard above. The Ranges shelter Broke Fordwich from much of the rainfall that surrounding districts receive. The area has a sandy loam with river flat alluvial soil, volcanic soil and pockets of red basalt giving wine producers a variety of soil types known as terra rossa.

Today Broke Fordwich is still making history. In 1994 it was the first area formally recognised as a separate viticultural. The village of Broke is at the base of the Brokenback and Hunter Ranges on the Wollombi Brook. While, historically, it is one of the oldest wine growing areas in Australia, it is only in the last 30 years that Broke Fordwich has started to become an important player in the Australian industry.

Today, more than a quarter of the Hunters wine grape production now comes from the area and Broke Fordwich wines are winning more than their fair share of national and international awards.

Importantly, Broke Fordwich retains its integrity as a rural community remaining free of large scale development yet offering first class B&B and self catering accommodation, restaurants and activities. Visitors to the area are surprised by the amount of wildlife they see. Its rare to visit the area without seeing kangaroos, wombats and a huge range of birds.

There is plenty to do.

How about a visit to the award winning Hunter Valley Gardens. Why not try Aqua Golf or treat yourself to a wonderful facial or massage in one of the lovely day spas. Fancy some horse riding or a visit to a Macadamia nut farm or Alpaca Farm. How about a visit to the chocolate or cheese factory or to the Blue Tongue Brewery. There are hundreds of great vineyards in the Hunter with great cellar doors and fantastic restaurants. Some of the best vineyards are on your doorstep. These include Margan Family Wines, Cockfighters Ghost Vineyard, Hope Estate, Broke Fordwich Wine Co Pty Ltd, Beyond Broke, Broke Estate, Pooles Rock, Mt Broke, Catherine Vale, Bacchus Estate, Krinklewood, Tinonee, Elysium, Elsmore and Nightingale Wines. There are also some wonderful Olive Groves where you can taste the local olives and oils. Or just sit back with a glass of your favorite wine and let the world go by.

Guest Reviews

  • "Whilst our party was split in half and I stayed at Maranda, I obviously went to have a look at Bonn Abbey and was impressed with its beauty and charm. It has the most fabulous bathrooms I've ever seen in accommodation! And it was very well equipped - plenty of blankets for cold nights, well-equipped kitchen and plenty of firewood for that magnificent fireplace. Our guests who stayed at Bonn Abbey were delighted with the house. We will be back - Jo Rowntree "

  • "Thanks for a great weekend at Bonn Abbey. In terms of feedback, I think the house provided everything we needed and was everything we hoped for in our weekend away. It was great. We didn't use much of the local services as to be honest, we were quite happy to sit and enjoy the house and all it had to offer, but we did some of the local winery tastings in Broke and really liked them. "

  • "We all had a fantastic time. Can't think of anything to improve on actually. We had a lovely day at some of the local wineries on satruday but it was a bit too hot to go outside yesterday so the boardgames were very much appreciated. "

  • "We all had a wonderful time at Bonn Abbey. The house is ideal for a group of couples or families, as there are lots of "nooks and cranies" where people can enjoy their own space, as well as wonderful communal areas too. It really was a great weekend.. and the pool at Cypress Lakes was fantastic!"

  • "We had a wonderful time at Bonn Abbey. Kids enjoyed sleeping in their own little lofts. We took your advice and had Melissa around to cook us breakfast which was much enjoyed by all! Will certainly let others know about Bonn Abbey when heading up to the Hunter All the Best Andrew Kemeny"

  • "I would like to thank you. From the moment we walked in the door and unpacked our Christmas goodies we felt right at home. Our stay was made even more enjoyable because the home accomodated all our needs. We had all our family meals at the large dining table and not once were we short of utensils cutlery or crockery The living areas and bedrooms we're a wonderful surprise and very comfortable and cosy. I will definately be recommending Bonn Abbey to others and am already thinking of the next big family event we need to celebrate so we can get away. "

  • "We were very pleased with the entire place. It took our 10 adults (5 couples) plus a 5-week old baby quite comfortably. A little squashy for the 5th couple, but acceptable. The fire created a great ambience on the cold wet days and nights, while the sun on the front verandah of a morning was just wonderful. Our grand daughter had wonderful sun baths on that verandah. Plenty of firewood, well stocked kitchen, lovely bathrooms, plenty of room.... the early check-in (noon) and late check-out (2pm) are really good allowing guests to get the most out of their stay We love the Hunter Valley and being there for a family wedding in Pokolbin worked out fine for us. Roads in the area need a lot of work, but everywhere we went, people were friendly, and we had a great time. Your emails and notes in the house are very informative and comprehensive. The complimentary bottle of red was a nice touch. Yes, we would (and have) recommend to others, and we may be back. We'd be happy for anyone to contact us about our comments. We had a great break, and will visit the area again. Thanks for having us stay at Bonn Abbey..... "
