Set in the grounds of historic Quamby Homestead (built in 1888, itself a B&B), the Carriage House is a self-contained, 2-bedroom cottage overlooking tranquil farm land, Quamby Flats. Quamby's superb gardens (William Guilfoyle designed) are a main feature of the property. Soak up the ambience, relax and enjoy, or spot kangaroo, echidna, possums, and study the historic plantings in a relaxed, private atmosphere. Guests can simply relax in the 3 acres of Botancal Garden, or wander the 70 acre Homestead property - home to cattle and poultry, perfect for children.
Quamby is an ideal accommodation break, as it is situated between the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians, en-route Melbourne to Adelaide and just 20 minutes' drive from Warrnambool and 25mins from Port Fairy. Stop to draw a breath or explore the unique volcanic coastline.
Scattered throughout the garden, the Quamby accommodation (listed individually on Stayz) also includes the standard Mews Rooms and the original School House (where the Lindsay children were once educated) and the Carriage House.
The Carriage House has two bedrooms (with queen and single beds), family shower-room, large living area, kitchen and delightful private terrace garden. Equipped with a fully self-contained kitchen, split system heating/air-conditioning, wood burning stove, digital TV/DVD, the Carriage House is the ideal getaway for the family or group of friends. Guests can either self-cater or take a B&B tariff that includes a cooked and continental breakfast served in the homestead dining room by a wood fire in winter, or on a shady verandah in the summer months.
Originally gazetted on February 1849, Quamby covered approximately 25,000 acres.
In 1853 it was sold to Paul de Castella, a Swiss vigneron who then went on to make his name in the Yarra Valley with Yering Station. It is believed the first house was built in the 1850’s, and located on the Croquet lawn.
William Lindsay purchased the property as a squatting lease in 1854, and the present homestead was commenced in 1888, taking two years for the foundations to be laid, and a further three years for the Homestead to be constructed!
The splendid botanic garden also has a strong history, having been designed as a private commission by William Guilfoyle, former curator of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens.
