The original brief was inspired by the existing shack culture of the area, sandy feet and constant foot traffic are realities of life at Collins Beach and it was important that these elements were reflected in the design concept. The building responds directly to its environment and specifically to shack life, creating an architectural type which challenges the typical suburban model while sitting comfortably in its coastal location. An appropriate material selection was crucial for longevity of the building in an environment where clear calm days can change to violent storms in a matter of minutes. Iron bark timber has been used extensively throughout the building, including the under-lit deck which brings dwellers into the heart of the living space. A requirement of the brief was that the building cater for and sleep up to 12 people at any one time and provide a degree of privacy and refuge in doing so.

Magnificent property - we shared with another family, 9 of us in total. Spacious, very natural and homely feel with all the luxuries. A view we will never forget all day round and beautiful warm water for the children to play in. If we can organise a return to The Decks, we will surely do it.
