A Settler's Waldorf accommodates four guests in two bedrooms - one with twin King single beds and the other with a Queen sized bed. Dogs and other pets are not allowed.
Your privacy is respected and assured. The cottage has a private entrance and is located approximately 150 metres from the owner's residence which is secluded in a rambling country garden of many mature trees. Guests are welcome to play tennis on the granite court near the main house.
Yesteryear's simplicity is the essence of this cosy cottage without clocks, telephone, television and digital clutter. Fragrant old fashioned roses and perennials blend with Australian plants in a water wise garden.
Well placed for exploring the region, A Settler's Waldorf is six kms from the National Trust classified village of O'Connell; 25 kms from Australia's oldest inland settlement Bathurst; 50 kms from the Industrial Heritage City of Lithgow and 30 kms from Oberon, renowned for its majestic high country and the spectacular Jenolan Caves.
Delightful walks and pleasant drives can be enjoyed in the immediate area. The Fish River has an abundance of tranquil picnic and swimming spots. Day trips can be comfortably made to the many nature reserves and national parks (including Jenolan & Abercrombie Caves, Kanangra Walls and Evans Crown); authentic former gold mining settlements such as Hill End and Sofala and various other interesting early settled villages many of which have been classified by the National Trust.
Popular rendezvous for the locals and visitors is The O'Connell Avenue Cafe and Store located in the old Butcher's Shop and open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Jo and Sandra give you the warmest welcome and brew excellent coffee from locally roasted beans. Delicious meals are reasonably priced with a tempting selection of sweet treats to accompany tea and coffee. Jo and Sandra have created their own special Avenue blend of O'Connell's Fish River Roasters coffee. The O'Connell Avenue Cafe has been named in honour of O'Connell Anzac Memorial Avenue, a beautiful living Cathedral of Desert Ash, which is viewed from the cafe courtyard. The Avenue is a national treasure and is significant as one of only a few surviving First World War avenues of honour in Australia.
O'Connell is rich in Australian colonial history and is listed on the Register of the National Estate. It was one of the first places settled by Europeans west of the Blue Mountains following the completion of Cox's Road in 1815. A Settler's Waldorf is one of the remaining early earth buldings of the O'Connell area. These comprise the oldest group of earth buildings in Australia.
O'Connell's high country has four distinct seasons from hot summers to chilly winters when the air is crisp, clear and invigorating. There are glorious displays of spring and autumn colour. The changing seasons and quality of light, the picturesque landscape, make A Settler's Waldorf a paradise for gardeners, artists, writers, romantics and those who enjoy the beautiful Australian bush.
Touch the sweet earth and find joy in the sky, the trees, the flowers and the birds at this peaceful place. Do nothing more energetic than listen to the figs grow (and eat them in season) and relax with a good book by a winter's log fire.
