About Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie: A Versatile Getaway

Port Macquarie is located on the coast of New South Wales, Australia, just under 400 kilometres north of Sydney. The town is a true natural beauty and includes a wide range of activities and attractions to keep holiday makers busy. Port Macquarie has a long history, which means that there are historic sites to explore alongside the more modern offerings in town. Rainforest, rivers, lakes, ocean beaches and rolling wine country surround the holiday destination. While in Port Macquarie, make your holiday your own by staying in a self-contained rental, such as a water-view apartment or a cosy holiday house.

Get to Know Local Wildlife

For animal lovers, there are many ways to see Port Macquarie's native species. Billabong Wildlife Park offers a zoo-like setting in which to see Australian wildlife. The park includes informative exhibits headed by friendly zookeepers. There are a number of interactive exhibits that allow you to feed and/or touch the animals. Check the schedule to see what shows are offered during your visit. While in Port Macquarie, tour the world's first koala hospital. At Koala Hospital, you have an amazing opportunity to learn little-known facts and watch damaged koalas being nursed back to health by a staff of volunteers. Photo opportunities are available. Of course, there are less formal ways to see animals during your stay in town, such as by visiting Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park. Walk along the paths and see lizards, bats, insects, birds and other creatures in their natural habitat. For an even more authentic look at wildlife, head into the less developed areas of the park.

Play a Round of Golf

When making your holiday in Port Macquarie, do not forget your golf clubs, as there are a number of challenging courses in the area. Port Macquarie Golf Club is the oldest course in the area, dating back to the earliest years of the 1900s. There are 18 holes on this course, gorgeous water features and a well-maintained clubhouse that is ideal for functions. Emerald Downs is the newest golf club in Port Macquarie and provides an 18-hole, par 70 experience. Lakes, dams and thousands of native trees surround the greens, and best of all, this course is within easy walking distance of Port Macquarie's beaches, shopping centreís and attractions. Before you head out to these courses, get a professional lesson, or hit up the town's golf store, Drummond Golf.

Splash About

There are several beaches in Port Macquarie, and they all have their own benefits. Flynn's Beach is the most popular beach in the town, with its long stretch of sandy beach and protected waters. The waters are ideal for beginner surfers, with the calm surfs. Rocky Beach is mostly scenic, as, just as the name states, there are lots of rocks. There are some waves for riding, though only the most experienced surfers are encouraged to enter these waters. This beach is unpatrolled and very dangerous for inexperienced water goers. Town and Oxley Beaches are the holiday destination's most family-friendly waters and are ideal for those with small children. If you are most comfortable in fresh water, check out the bountiful water activities on the Hastings River.

Take a Look at Yesteryear

In addition to modern conveniences and activities, there is a ton of history in Port Macquarie. For the best look at the town's colourful past, venture over to the Port Macquarie Historical Museum. The exhibits within the museum begin with the aboriginal residents of the town many years ago and end with more current exhibits. Take a look at everything from historic fashion to dentistry tools, and learn an in-depth history of Port Macquarie. Set on the same grounds as the Koala Hospital, Roto House is a beautifully restored Victorian home. Tour the home itself, the many verandas and even the lush grounds that surround. For history on the move, try out one of Port Macquarie's heritage tours.

Holiday in Port Macquarie

Sydney's international airport is the best way to access this versatile holiday destination. Make sure you allot ample time for your stay in Port Macquarie, thanks to the shear amount of activity in the town.
