Nelson Bay is the main town for Port Stephens and it would be hard to find anywhere better equipped for aquatic pursuits ? plus a great array of accommodation and dining options. On the town's doorstep within the sheltered arms of the bay there are safe, calm beaches that are ideal for small children, while the coastal beaches just a five-minute drive away are washed by booming waves.
The diving and snorkelling here is exceptional. Just east of Nelson Bay, the tiny promontory of Fly Point is an aquatic reserve with prolific marine life. Divers have another superb site just off the coast at Broughton Island, with such outstanding features as the 'Looking Glass', a split that runs through the middle of the island, crowded with marine life.
To the south of Nelson Bay, Stockton Beach has the country's largest coastal dune system, stretching for more than 30 km to the northern outskirts of Newcastle. Be sure to also visit the Nelson Head Heritage Lighthouse and Reserve.
Shoal Bay is named after the numerous sand shoals which are scattered around the area. The area features excellent bush walking area as well as the "bay experience".
Shoal Bay, on Port Stephens, is a popular holiday destination on the mid-north coast where visitors relax in the pristine and tranquil environment.
There are shops and restaurants along the beach and the Shoal Bay Country Club and luxurious Shoal Bay Resort & Spa are major draw cards to the area. Other Shoal Bay accommodation includes villas, apartments, B&Bs and holiday units.
The area is a great base for fishing trips and cruises around Port Stephens. Five minutes away is the Nelson Bay Marina where you can board for whale and dolphin watching cruises.
Be sure to explore Tomaree National Park, a 20 km strip of rocky coastline between Anna Bay and Shoal Bay.

WHALE WATCHING IN PORT STEPHENS:
Port Stephens is known for its pristine beaches, crystal waters and spectacular marine life ? so it?s no wonder that a pod of resident dolphins have made the region their permanent home. It?s also a great whale-watching spot during the season from May to November.
You?ll have a whale of a time on Australia?s mid-north coast ? especially around Port Stephens, which is a top spot to see Humpbacks and Southern right whales passing during their annual migration. Mid-May to Early September sees the whales moving north to their breeding grounds and from Mid September to the Middle of October the south migration kicks in with lots of Humpback mothers with their new born calves seen during October.
Pods are easy to spot from the Tomaree National Park, and the Tomaree Head Summit Walk is considered one of the top ten panoramic views in Australia. Port Stephens? beaches and foreshores also offer good whale-watching, especially from Boat Harbour, Anna Bay, Fisherman?s Bay and Barry Park in Fingal Bay. If you?re on a quad bike tour on the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, you could be lucky enough to sight passing whales right from the beach.
Tamboi Queen Cruises, Moonshadow Cruises and Imagine Cruises run regular whale-watching tours during the season from Nelson Bay. Alternatively, join a Discovery Ranger on the Wild About Whales tour in Tomaree National Park, held from June to September. Junior Ranger tours designed especially for kids run in June, July, September and October.
