The Barn began life on the banks of the Shoalhaven River. It was built to house feed and stores for a small dairy holding in the early days of south coast settlement. When we discovered it, while visiting friends on a neighbouring property, it was looking in need of a fresh start and so, we dismantled it, put it on the back of a truck and brought it to our property on the outskirts of Berry.
We rebuilt it and we installed a galley kitchen and bathroom, replaced the plumbing and wiring, replaced some of the jarrah cladding and the entire roof, installed a wood fire, ran a veranda around it, and lavished it with paint internally.
A beautiful, calm, natural setting.
The Barn sits high on the property at the end of a no through road, surrounded by trees, looking down the valley over vineyards, grazing land and forest all the way to the ocean at Seven Mile Beach, 10 kilometres away.
The site was once covered in lantana and privet but selective clearing and weeding has led to amazing natural rainforest regeneration of red, white and pencil cedars, koda, pittosporums, cleradendrons and whalebones for example. The bird life is prolific. It is a very private and peaceful hideaway just 5 minutes up the valley from Berry.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Old Barn. A perfect little cottage in a beautiful spot.

The Old Barn/Tathra Cottage
We have stayed in both the cottages and were very sorry to hear that someone had not enjoyed their stay. Annie is a wonderful host and both stays left us relaxed and wanting more. We took our pup both times, which we have been puppy raising for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT for the past 12 months and he LOVED it. He met a gorgeous brown dog each stay and had a frolic on the verandah with them. Nature is all around you and the cottages provide all the creature comforts you need for that rustic, relaxing getaway. We can't wait to book our next stay.

The hectic pace of city living, surrounded by brick walls and cement had me craving peace and quiet and the sound of birds singing not sirens wailing. The Old Barn in Berry, a rustic little cabin, was just the sanctuary I was looking for. Private, surrounded by bush with just a glimpse down towards the coast. There were Lyre birds, Honey Eaters and a variety of Parrots for company (plus the odd wombat) - it's a nature lovers paradise. There are cooking facilities, and a veranda which is loaded with fresh air! I canât wait to get back there.

We stayed two nights at The Old Barn in early May. Booking was really easy, with Annie replying to my initial enquiry on Stayz really quickly, which is why we booked. Finding the Old Barn, which is about ten minutes drive out of Berry, initially south from Berry along Kangaroo Valley Road, was easy as Annie sent us very clear directions. It might be a little more difficult if you arrive in the dark.
The old Barn is just that, an old barn that was dismantled, moved, reconstructed and then fitted out to be like a large, one-roomed cottage. There is a kitchenette with a full-size gas stove if you really want to cook and an eclectic mix of kitchen utensils, crockery etc. Tea, instant coffee, oat cereal and some condiments were also provided. There is also a microwave, toaster, kettle and some pots and pans, although we didnât bother cooking as there are great eating options in Berry.
A large couch and table sit at one end of the room, with a very comfortable bed and small bathroom at the other end. Towels and a bottle of shower wash was provided but you need to bring your own toiletries and perhaps a small soap for the handbasin.
A small TV and DVD player with a collection of DVDs is also provided. There is no TV reception and no wifi. My Telstra data and mobile phone reception was patchy which didnât matter, but might worry some.
My disappointment was that we had to buy our own wood in order to use the wood-burning heater ($15 a bag from the service station in Berry). There was a sign left on the dining table firmly telling us that wood is only provided during Winter and that the wood stacked under the barn was only for the ownerâs use. There was an electric heater available. The barn seemed to get quite cold early in the day as it is on the higher part of the property and the afternoon sun disappears very early in the afternoon, shaded by the high escarpment behind the barn. Some of the windows have blinds, but others, including the double glass entry doors are not covered, which may feel a little unsettling at night and probably lets some of the heat escape. The barn is quite separate from the other two cottages, with a glimpse of the dam below and the ocean some miles away through trees (the trees have grown since the photos posted on the Stays website). It was usually very quiet too, although the large grassed areas were mowed and whipper-snipped, beginning just after 8 am on our first morning, and although we were warned about that when we arrived, it was noisy and intrusive.
Overall, it is unique, secluded accommodation, charming, rustic, comfortably furnished but maybe a little over-priced, especially as you have to pay for your own wood.

Stunning accommodation in a stunning location
There is nothing you can fault about this property. My partner, cat (yes...my cat) and I visited the Old Barn over the 2015 Easter long weekend and it was everything we wanted as a break out of Sydney. About a ten minute drive from the main street of Berry (watch the wombat on the way in, that fella was not going to move for noone....), the property is private and secluded. The "barn" itself is self-contained and has everything you need, including a deck of cards and some board games for the rainy nights. We stocked up on some Gerringong and Kangeroo Valley wines and enjoyed many an afternoon on the verandah watching the rain across the stunning landscape. I look forward to visiting again, thanks Annie.
