    Rookwood Necropolis (Cemetery)

Some 700 acres in size, this is one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian cemetery in the world, and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. First established in 1868, it is in constant use and now has some 800,000 people buried there. The heritage values of the cemetery are protected by an Act of Parliament. Rookwood is a place of peace and tranquillity, equally loved by families, historians, artists, environmentalists, and casual visitors. It has the oldest crematorium and the largest war cemetery in Australia. Over 100 religious and cultural groups use Rookwood as a final resting place for their loved ones. Funerary customs, brought here from all over the world, reflect Australia\'s multicultural society. Regular and exotic tours (e.g., Plague and Pestilence, Murder and Mayhem) are conducted by the Friends of Rookwood. You may hear the story of the manager of the cemetery\'s Catholic section being shot dead by one of his employees, whom he\'d dismissed. However you can also drive through or wander around at your leisure. THIS INFORMATION BROUGHT TO YOU COURTESY \"MUM\'S HOUSE\", www.stayz.com.au/5446.
