Local History in Sydney City

  •

    Classic Sydney

King Street, Newtown is being fast tracked for placement on the State Heritage List. Already listed on the Register of the National Estate, King Street is jam packed with some of Sydney's finest examples of Victorian, 1930's art deco - especially the many and varied pubs - Queen Anne and Italianate architecture. Most of Newtown's imaginatively decorated shops, restaurants, cafes and bars feature the distinctive designs of each of these eras. Take a wander around the backstreets to enjoy some of the glorious residential buildings, or visit one of Sydney's original churches, St Stephens. (For those with a morbid fascination, the church grounds is one of the eeriest graveyards you'll ever see!) Newtown is one of the most vibrant and fascinating suburbs in Australia, home to many students, artisans and musicians who take great pride in calling this inner city gem their home.
