Market patrons can enjoy the tastes of five continents all in the space of a leisurely walk along the stunning setting of Mindil Beach, Darwin in the Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia. The market is also famed for the huge range and quality of its art and craftwork. Visitors to the market get a taste of tropical life as stallholders converge on Mindil to sell their hand made wares. Crocodile, kangaroo and Barramundi products, Indigenous and Bush Art, clothing, sculpture, pottery, puppets, soaps and didgeridoos, you name it and it’s likely that you can get it at Mindil Beach. You can book a tour, get a massage, have your palm read, listen to your Tarot readings, watch the buskers and performing artists, listen to the live bands or just kick back, eat great food and watch the sunset.

    Be Entertained

    Many of the theme pubs have regular live bands playing and this is your chance to see and hear a visiting band or a local Darwin group hitting the stage. The Casino at Mindil Beach has regular entertainment.There are two cinemas, one in the city itself the other at Casuarina Square, over ten BIG screens. There are several theatre groups in Darwin who perform regularly and the ultra-modern Darwin Entertainment Centre hosts local, national and international acts. During the dry season the Deckchair outdoor cinema on the esplanade is a delightful experience to take in a movie under the stars with a glass of wine.
     

Things To Do in Darwin

    Down the Track

    If it's out of town for you then see the crocs fed at Crocodylus Park or spend your day swimming in the rock pools and under waterfalls at Litchfield National Park. Not that far out of Darwin there's the famous Adelaide River Jumping Croc boat tours, don't hang over the side and a full day can be spent at the Territory Wildlife Park. Further afield and perhaps an overnight stay is needed there's Kakadu National Park and Katherine Gorge. Both these are a 3 hour + trip out of Darwin so why not overnight in one of the many hotels or motels in the area, budget to 5 star or camp under the stars.

    Nightcliff Foreshore

    Darwin is reknown for its sunsets and, combined with perfect weather mid year, there is nothing better than grabbing a bottle of wine or a couple of cold beers and heading down to one of the many picnic areas along the Nightcliff foreshore and watching the sunset. The place positively comes alive in the late afternoon as locals and visitors alike take time to 'get physical' and walk their dogs and kids, following the walking/bike track along the beach front. Why not top it off with a pizza or fish & chips; just sit back and watch the world go by!

Sightseeing in Darwin

    So much to see.

    The Museum and Art Gallery is a must see with it's fasinating collection of aboriginal art and historic maritime section, Sweetheart, the big croc also hangs out at the museum. Other points of interest include Crocodylus Educational & Wildlife Park, the Military and Aviation museums, feed the fish at Doctors Gully or visit the outdoor markets at Nightcliff, Rapid Creek and Parap. During the wonderful dry season, May-October the famous Mindil Beach Sunset markets are in full swing on a Thursday evening, see it to believe it and on Sunday's the Mindil Markets do it all over again. Parliment House or the Wedding Cake as the locals call it, the Supreme Court and Government House are well worth a visit. The city and suburbs have some great sandy beaches including the Casuarina Free Beach, free because togs are an option. There's also two man-made lakes ideal for safe swimming PLUS the new Wave Pool at the Wharf Precinct. End your day at the Sailing Club and take in a Fannie Bay sunset.

    Both the city and suburbs as well as the city of Palmerston, south of Darwin,have many well serviced and stocked retail stores from small trendy boutiques to the large discount department stores. In the city the Smith Street Mall is a great place to shop while the Casuarina Shopping Square is the Territory's largest shopping centre.. There are a number of smaller shopping centres including Fannie Bay and Parap Shopping Village.

Interstate bus companies provide daily links to southern states and another travel option is the romantic Adelaide to Darwin, via Alice Springs Ghan railway. Many choose to drive to the Top End in their own vehicles.
