The Lorne Township

One of Victoria's best known, and most popular resort towns nestled between the magnificent Otway ranges and the beach of Loutitit Bay. Lorne is one of the most popular destinations along the Great Ocean Road with day trippers from Melbourne and Geelong visiting on weekend drives and exploring the town. Lorne has a special charm, with a cafe' culture, fascinating shops and beautiful beach, no wonder it is such a popular holiday spot.

The town has the best of both worlds; the beautiful forests of the Great Otway National Park and the dramatic scenery of the Great Ocean Road combined with all the creature comforts and fine food you would expect in a cosmopolitan seaside resort. Indulge all your senses with a peaceful escape that restores the balance back to life.

The towns unique charms were recognised early, with Lorne the first Victorian place to be declared an area of Special Significance and Natural Beauty-more than 100 years ago.

After World War I, the Great Ocean Road was carved out of the coastline. It was initially conceived as a memorial to those who had fought in the First World War and all road builders were ex-servicemen. The section as far as Lorne was opened in 1922, although the Great Ocean Road was not completed in its entirety until 1933. It greatly facilitated access to Lorne which had hitherto been approached from the interior. The first passenger service from Geelong to Lorne was established in 1924 and guesthouses began to appear in the 1930s. The fishing industry was also established on a small scale at Lorne in 1936 but it expanded considerably in the 1940s. The Ash Wednesday bushfires swept through the district in 1983, destroying 76 houses.

New Year's Eve is an activity-filled day of the calendar at Lorne. The Mountain to Surf Swim is held on the first Friday evening in January and several thousand swimmers participate in the Pier to Pub Swim on the following day. The Summer Fair falls on a Saturday late in January and the Great Otway Classic Foot Race is held on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June terminating at Lorne.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not have been better A fantastic stay her - could not fault it at all. Everything we needed was in the apartment. The kitchen was very well equipped and there was comfortable furniture throughout. Unit was very well located, quiet and spotlessly clean. It was also very well designed: despite being quite small in floor area, it feels very roomy and airy. It even has colour-coordinated cutlery, linen, crockery, etc. Rob was very helpful and responsive. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The little 1 bedroom studio was perfect - clean, modern, equipped with everything we needed. Rob was more than accommodating and the location was perfect, a short walk to the beach!! Thank you for a beautiful stay :) We will definitely be back!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lovely unit located in town opposite the Tourist information. There are 2 lines of units off the main great Ocean Road that look like Beach Boxes which incidentally historically Lorne had Beach boxes along the beach. You park the car underneath the units and collect the key from the key box. All very easy.The modern unit was clean and had everything you require. Downstairs was a small kitchen/lounge/diner open plan with all amenities with a small balcony overlooking the parking area but nice to be able to let the fresh air in and listen to the birds. Upstairs was located the bedroom, bathroom with washing machine and dryer. The unit was quiet and we had good nights sleep. A wonderful mini break, great location and would stay again if in the area.Lorne is a lovely town with fantastic beach. Located around were some great BBQs for cooking as well. The hotel pub did great food and we also visited the old theatre to see the Movie Sapphires. The theatre is not open every night but has 2 movies available at different times so great to go support the fact that Lorne has managed to keep the theatre open.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Words can't describe beauty of this place! I can name it cozy, home, outstanding, very clean, the best location - just perfect place set up with heaps of love and care. We felt looked after and spoiled beyond any expectation. I can't tell what I preferred more - from the tiniest attention to detail to large things like fluorescent stars on the ceiling, sand clock in the shower, matching colours on the wall pictures, matching placemats, matching cutlery, dishes and facade, tiny balcony behind the large double door or upstairs bedroom balcony visible from downstairs lounge. Nothing was missing. We fell in love with this apartment. You simply must see it to believe it. We can't wait to pay it a visit again at any time of year. This was the best service I've ever had anywhere I stayed. Keep doing a great job Rob and thanks for your speedy replies at all times!
