Ararat is only 2.5 hours from Melbourne on the Western Highway. Very good base from which to explore the numerous wineries of the Great Western, Pyrenees and Langi Ghiran areas, and of course the Grampians.

Town has most amenities you'd require including some excellent pubs and cafes, plus the petrol is often cheaper than the big smoke.

The wineries near Ararat are the attraction for me- Great Western, Mt Langi Ghiran and the Montara wineries all worth a tasting and a tipple. Visit also the Chinese Museum- a well documented and presented account of Chinese in the area and take in the bluestone heritage buildingd scattered around the town.

Not much to offer here except to stock up on supplies before continuing on to explore the close by Grampians or on the way through to Adelaide

Ararat is an old gold mining town. The best thing about it though is it is close to the little town Great western. There are three fabulous wineries here you can visit.

Ararat is a town on the Western Highway in the North West of Victoria. It is approx a 6 hour drive from Melbourne. It has the world class Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre which tells the story of Chinese miners from the Guangdong Province in China. It tells about the lives of these immigrant miners in the late 1800’s in the Ararat Goldfields. Take your own journey and relive the experience of Chinese gold prospectors on their great trek from Robe, South Australia to the Victorian goldfields.
