Description

As a summer or winter retreat, the award winning Silver Street Studio is a very special place. This very spacious hideaway is private and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. The Studio is the perfect place in which to relax, and to escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, the sea, and everything Fremantle has on offer.

Originally built as an artist's space, then gallery, the Studio has now been thoughtfully converted into a comfortable, quirky and eclectic living space. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, and other wonderful items of memorabilia, including a turret, from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building is full of local history.

On arrival you enter into the property through a small wooden door within a 'medieval' gate. Ivy trails over high limestone walls which seclude a lush courtyard garden. In summer, this area is shaded by a plane tree, a poinciana, palms, an olive tree, a weeping mulberry and a grape vine. This is an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or romantic evening BBQ.

Huge glass doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the downstairs living space which is open plan - has a well equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfortable lounge. The rugs and furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architecture create a rich environment.

The upper studio level, originally used for producing ceramics, is now reached internally via a sculptural steel staircase. The bedroom area has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with best quality bedding and crisp white linen sheets. A small mezzanine connects this space to a bathroom/dressing/sitting room. This upstairs space opens onto the north facing balcony which provides a wonderful 'open air' spot for a sumptuous bath under the stars (see image). The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space. This northern balcony can also be reached via a limestone stairwell connecting to the courtyard below.

A downstairs store room houses two mountain bikes which can be made available to guests on request.

On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Western Australian wine, locally grown macadamia nuts, chocolates, flowers, Margaret River olive oil soaps, plus a delicious, now notorious welcome hamper for your first morning and beyond. Besides a selection of beautiful fresh fruits, the hamper contains locally made jam, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery just at the end of the street and more.

An extra single bed can be made available on request and/or a cot for a small baby. However, we primarily see the Studio as a romantic retreat for couples.

Please note that the Studio is not safe for active toddlers, the very frail or fainthearted. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, idiosyncratic, space that truly rewards the romantic adventurer, and those with creative spirit who want something a little different from an ordinary hotel suite. This well known icon has a fascinating history which weaves together and extends many a local story.

The Studio is in a superb location

Silver Street Studio is private, yet centrally placed and near all facilities. It is two just hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour, and within easy reach of both South Beach and/or Central Fremantle.

In the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub, we are very close to a variety of great local restaurants, specialty shops, galleries, fresh food outlets, a supermarket and cafes. These include Ootong and Lincoln just at the end of our little street, Manna Wholefoods, Abbis, the ever popular Swiss bakery, and more - all within 100 metres. For those who want to be 'renewed', there is a beauty / massage centre close by. The yoga centre just across the road could help with the final unwind.

You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable or easy by bike. However, the free CAT bus service does run every ten minutes from the end of the road, taking a circular route around Fremantle via various sites of historic interest, also stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not borrow our mountain bikes and explore Fremantle: take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches through the coastal heath-lands.

We are close to many holiday attractions and historic sites

Enjoy the beach and a range of available water sports: the cafe life, art galleries and other local attractions. These include the WA Maritime Museum, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Fremantle Jail and the convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, the Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and wonderful local eateries. Fremantle has a vibrant night life. There are great day trips available and regular ferries leaving for Rottnest Island, local fishing spots, and whale watching areas. These can all be booked through the Tourist Office.

You can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Romance of a lifetime Yes you have to bring the love, the passion and the sense of fun yourself but Silver Street Studio is the perfect setting for two lovers to paint the story of their passion, to sculpt their love and draw their bath on the external balcony. What more can one say about such a romantic setting other than: prepare to spend a lot of time there - you will love it too!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERFUL RETREAT WITH ALL THE CONVENINCE Such a beautiful place to stay, do not be put off by the word Studio, it is very spacious and light filled relaxing environment. Love the complimentary "Welcome Hamper" with local produce and fine foods, this is such a treat after a long journey. All the conveniences you require for a business or holiday trip in beautiful surroundings - great artwork, courtyard garden and plenty of books and magazine to read while relaxing in a big armchair or soft sofa. Great local Cafes and shops are just out of the front door on South Terrace and about a 5- 10 minute walk to central Fremantle and markets. Will definitely try to get back to Silver St Studio for a long relaxing holiday soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved every minute This place is beautiful! My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and fell in love with the studio the minute we walked through the door. It was great to have a place to sit and relax after a chaotic few weeks, and there were heaps of good restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. We're already making plans to return next year.
