Easy to find, easy to park, Magnolia Cottage is in a very central yet very quiet location, only 1km from the Australian War Memorial, and a short drive to the Capital's tourist attractions.
Fully equipped and family and pet friendly, Magnolia Cottage is a heritage-listed weatherboard two-bedroom home set in established gardens, on a quiet residential street. Built in in the late 1920s, with wide Baltic pine floor boards, high ceilings, cedar picture rails, and original sash windows throughout, this cottage is an original alternative accommodation for your Canberra short or long stay.
Magnolia Cottage has two bedrooms - queen bed in one, 2 singles (electric blankets) and large convertible cot in the other, with a day bed in the enclosed front verandah. The house can sleep 4 comfortably, and up to 6-7 if you like it cozy. Linen is provided for each booked person.
The fully equipped kitchen has oven, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge/freezer, tea and coffee facilities, quality crockery and cutlery. I provide some cooking basics, plus simple selection of Australian tea, coffee, biscuits, cereal and milk.
The laundry has a front loader washing machine, tumble dryer and drying racks, ironing board and steam iron. I provide washing powder. There's an original 'Hills Hoist' clothes line and pegs out back too.
The cottage's fully sound-insulated internal and external walls reduce sound transmission between rooms making for a quiet night's sleep, reduced heat gain in summer and heat loss or drafts in winter.
Heating is by programable gas convection heater in the sitting room, oil-filled column radiators for the bedrooms, Tastic and heated towel rail in the bathroom.
Cooling by free-standing fans for bedrooms, portable air conditioner for sitting room with the cooling effect flowing throughout. External passive cooling by natural hessian drop shading in summer and keeping curtains closed during the day to reduce heat gain.
The front garden is a riot of colour in spring, with its feature magnolia tree, azaleas, camellias, and borders chock full of herbs and flowering bulbs. It gets a bit shabby as the bulbs dry off, and the privat and pyracantha hedge grows out and bursts into flower, followed by summer colour and scent from the roses, honeysuckle and sweet williams. Later in summer we have a few cherries, apricots, pears and apples to pick (remember to leave some for the next guests), as well as herbs and rhubarb.
The securely fenced pet friendly back yard has space for kids and pets to run around with shady spots for chilling out, plus fledgling espalier fruit trees - peaches, cherry plums, plums, greengage, blackberries, raspberries, all starting to yield herb and vegetable gardens with tomatoes, silver beet, lettuce, depending on the season and weather. The back yard also has its iconic Hills Hoist. See my facebook page for what's ready for picking, plucking, browsing and when!
A bitumen drive links front to back giving sufficient hard standing for off road parking for several cars, trailer, caravan for those on the move.
Corroboree Park, with its tennis & basketball courts, climbing frames, swings, slides and free barbecue is just over the quiet road.

Well behaved pets are welcome, and are allowed inside the sun room, kitchen and sitting room. Pets are NOT allowed on the furniture or in the bedrooms. I provide some old sheets and towels for you to use for your pet/s in the sun room (they are in the drawer in the sunroom cabinet). Please feed pets outside or in the sun room - from previous guests feedback - NOT in the kitchen or elsewhere in the house please. Dog water bowls are located under taps for use outside.
The large back garden is securely fenced (fences are 1.2-1.8m) with lots of running around space and some dog toys (earlier guests dependent). I have provided a clam paddling pool for dogs to cool off in (please empty it on departure). I have installed a dog poo composter - to make disposal of droppings easy for you- to pick up after your pet, as all of us responsible pet owners try to do! Do not bag the droppings- it's easy to just use a little compost or grass clippings and the spade (which should be next to the composter).
Smoking is allowed outside in the garden if you wish. Smoking is not allowed inside. You will need to pick up, bag, and bin all butts and associated waste.
