Description

Our property offers a homely alternative to the ubiquitous motel but see booking rule below please. And Lithgow is a great place to make a stopover on the journey West. Or on a Hinterland Road Trip. But why not stay a while and see what you could possibly have missed.....? We provide breakfast for the first morning.

BOOKING RULE

As we are welcoming guests into our home please introduce yourselves when booking and provide some travel details. We will decline any request which does not give us any idea of whom we are going to meet.

THE LOCALE

Hermitage Flat is a heritage suburb on the western edge of Lithgow where quaint miners' cottages hug the hill. The property is 2 minute's drive from the Great Western Highway and 12 minute's level walk from the bus and train station, Main Street shops and restaurants. The Showground is also a 10 minute walk away.

THE HOUSE

Built in 1872 to house the meetings of the Directors of the now disappeared Hermitage Mine across the road, the building was soon extended to provide overnight accommodation for them. Now, over a century later, it offers the same hospitality once more to travellers and visitors.

THE GARDEN

also has history in the ancient oaks and linden trees in the garden which surround the house on 3 sides. It has a backdrop of hills to one side and overlooks the Glanmire oval cricket and hockey pitches on the other.

HOUSE RULES

Babies in their own cots are welcome but the suite is not child friendly.

We are basically a B&B but there is a basic kitchenette in the living room with sink, fridge, microwave, coffee machine, toaster and kettle: All adequate for simple salad preparation or heating ready meals. We do ask guests not to prepare fried food or heavily spiced food as there is no extractor fan and cooking smells can pervade the whole house. Breakfast is provided, of course.

THE PARKING

We have ample off street parking for cars, 4X4, trailers even a campervan. Secure covered parking is also offered for classic cars, bicycles and motorbikes.

THE ACCOMMODATION

..... .is a guest wing for 1-2 guests comprising 1 bedroom with queen sized bed, an art deco shower room, a large living room with kitchenette and breakfast table which, like all the rooms, has french doors which open out onto the sunny morning verandah where there are several tables and chairs for your choice of breakfast seating al fresco by the lily pool.

THE BREAKFAST

... a good choice of fresh items for mix and match first breakfast for you to have at your own time and your own pace where you like, inside or out on the terrace, will be provided in the fridge.

THE TOWN

Lithgow has a motto - 'surprisingly diverse' - which it is, I realise, as I write up this description. Not being on the well trodden tourist trail it surprises the visitor with the diversity of interest. Of course industrial heritage is its reason for being. Railway, mining, iron and brick works, pottery and small arms manufacture. Websites such as the Lithgow tourism site and visit NSW can give more details of the places to visit than I can list here. But I'll try some. Eskbank House, built 1842 is one of the first house museums in NSW. Furniture from that time, as well as modern art exhibitions are housed here. There is a walk to the Pillans Lake wildlife reserve from here. The Small Arms Museum is on the site of the factory where Australia's defence munitions were and still are to some extent manufactured. The State Rail and Mining Museum has a collection of railway rolling stock and artefacts, as well as organised trips in vintage carriages. Secret Creek wildlife sanctuary located up the next gully from Hermitage Flat, rescues endangered species, as well as being home to a pack of dingos belonging to the proprietor. Some mornings while dog walking, I can hear them demanding their breakfast This is a 2 minute drive or 15 minute walk away. Weekends you can get brunch or dinner there by reservation. Tours can be organised during the week.

THE SURROUNDING AREA

Overwhelmingly the countryside around Lithgow is the most diverse you can find in an area this size.

The Jewel in the Crown is undoubtedly Hassan's Walls Lookout. At 1100 metres above sea level it gives the MOST outstanding panorama - it takes the breath away. Picnic tables are here, but best to sit and watch the sun go down.... You can see the escarpments, the valleys, the pine forests, the rolling hills and a glimpse of the plains beyond. It makes you want to go there......

Scenic drives to destinations using Lithgow as the hub under 2 hours but can be day trips include:

Tarana and Rydal rural villages, passing Lake Lyell - campsites and watersports surrounded by pine forest and on through lovely gentle rural landscape with pubs to stop en route.

Kanimbla Valley - dramatic rolling valleys and hills, home to the famous Wagu beef herd. Make Oberon the destination where is found the beautiful Mayfield Gardens.

Little Hartley and the Comet Inn, - go bush for a walk here in explorer's footsteps.

Glow Worm Tunnel Trail - more bush walking in the Wollemi National Park, with fascinating nature at the end.

Wolgan Valley to Newnes - secret, secluded, silent, ancient.

Captertee Valley - huge, dramatic and primeval and home to rare birds. Rylstone with its quaint streets and cafes and olive farm is a destination here.

Sightly further - complete heritage villages such as Carcoar and Millthorpe between Bathurst and Orange.

Sofala and Hill End, bush driving made comfortable.

Mudgee, 2 hours hence with its wineries and olive groves.

We can give advice on any trip you feel you would like to do.

ABOUT US

This is our first foray into accommodation provision in Australia, so best to introduce ourselves...

We are half/half Aussie/English and used to provide B&B and self catering accommodation in the Shropshire Hills and then Cornwall in the UK. So we are 'old hands' We are people-friendly but cigarette averse, so forgive us, but our property is totally non smoking. Babies are also very very welcome, but we don't have any cots I'm afraid. We can babysit if you would like to go out for a meal. Our son is travelling the world in his land rover, so we have an affinity to off-road4x4 adventurers. We are Morris Minor owners so we also welcome like minded mad people, - and do not turn our noses up at any other classic cars coming our way - the more the merrier A few makes and marques have passed through our garage portals in the past. Gardening and house restoration have taken up most of our time in the recently, and when we lived in Europe we travelled the waterways in a dutch barge.
