About Avoca Beach

An hour drive north of Sydney via the Newcastle Freeway, Avoca Beach is a popular holiday location. With wooded hills and certain quietness, you can find relaxation just by lying on the sand. Avoca Beach offers excellent shopping with a variety of cafes, shops, restaurants, and more.

Avoca Beach: Elegance on the Central Coast

Avoca Beach is considered an upmarket retreat on the Central Coast, with its pristine beaches, leafy streets and stretches of stylish restaurants. The holiday destination is favoured by families, couples and those looking to relax in sunny surrounds.

You can visit dive sites just off the coast, walk along oceanfront trails or browse local creations at the Avoca Beachside Markets. Further inland, trek through lush national parks and learn about Aboriginal history. Don’t neglect other nearby coastal towns, such as The Entrance, where children can watch daily pelican feedings.

Holiday rentals in Avoca Beach include spacious houses and apartments only metres from the water.

Avoca Beach: Swimming, Surfing and Snorkeling

There are ample ocean-based activities in Avoca Beach. The town’s main beach is a stretch of golden caught between rocky headlands, with spots for swimming and surfing. The beach is favoured by surfers of all skill levels, as it has breaks of varying intensities.

Other beaches in the area include Copacabana, another popular surfing destination, and Macmasters Beach, favoured by families.

Offshore, snorkelers and divers can head to the purposefully shipwrecked Ex-HMAS Adelaide. Hire a boat and gear for solo dives (permits required) or join a tour for a guided experience.

Avoca Beach Walks & Hikes

Stretch your legs on land, with many options for hiking, bushwalking and coastal strolling on the Central Coast. In Avoca, a paved walking path leads to Captain Cook Lookout and winds along the south side of the main beach, affording prime ocean views and leading to lesser known fishing holes.

Each year, visitors can take part in the 5 Lands Walk, a 9 km trek along the Central Coast’s waterfront. This winter event begins at MacMasters Beach, right next to Avoca, and finishes in Terrigal. Walkers come from far and wide to participate in the communal walk, and there are special activities at every town or pitstop along the way.

The Central Coast is home to several national parks with extensive trail networks. Bouddi National Park’s tracks lead to significant Aboriginal heritage sites and lookouts that double up as whale watching spots. Brisbane Water National Park is further inland, offering trails that lead through rainforests and past sandstone formations.

Avoca Beach for Families

Avoca Beach is a strategic base for family holidays, with many attractions in town and a short drive away. For a quiet day close to your rental, head to Avoca Lake, a family favourite. The placid waters are ideal for families with young children. Kayaks, peddle boats and paddleboards are available for hire.

Learn one of these water sports or go on a tour of the coastal lake with local guides. A large playground and grassy picnic areas line the shores of Avoca Lake. Back on the oceanfront, surfing lessons are available for kids of all ages.

While you’re on the Central Coast, take the kids to The Entrance for pelican feedings. These feedings have become a Central Coast tradition and take place each day, rain or shine. The Entrance also has a patrolled beach, foreshore playground, sea baths and plenty of family-friendly cafes.

Avoca Beach: In Town

To conclude active days, unwind in town and take your pick of stylish al fresco dining options, many of which boast water views. Stroll along Avoca Drive and see what suits you best, from fresh seafood to modern Australian dishes.

Before or after dinner, watch an indie flick at Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, an independent cinema set in a heritage building. The theatre hosts artistic and cultural events throughout the year, including live musical performances. Make sure to check out what’s on during your stay.

If you’re visiting on the 4th Sunday of each month, you can go to the Avoca Beachside Markets, held from 9 am to 2 pm. There are usually over 100 stalls, selling locally-made clothing, homegoods and food. These are the biggest markets on the Central Coast, so arrive early to avoid the crowds.

Getting to Avoca Beach

Avoca Beach is set halfway between Sydney and Newcastle. It takes around an hour-and-a-half to drive to the Central Coast town from either city. Public transport also connects Avoca Beach to Sydney and Newcastle. When you opt for the train or bus, the journey can take double the time.
