Pearl Beach: A Scenic Holiday Hotspot
The quiet seaside village of Pearl Beach is one of those holiday destinations where you can spend your break almost exclusively outside. The sunny town features a long strip of sand, given its name for the pearl-shaped granite rocks once found on the beach. Visitors can have picnics on the leafy foreshore or dine in style at one of the waterfront restaurants.
Stretch your legs on Pearl Beach’s countless trails leading to scenic lookouts. Get acquainted with local flora at the arboretum, or join a walk-in yoga class close to the beach. Holiday rentals in Pearl Beach range from cosy apartments behind the main street to sweeping family homes by the water.
Waterfront Action in Pearl Beach
Pearl Beach’s main beach is where most of the town’s waterfront activities take place. This stretch of sand is backed by a reserve with picnic tables and BBQ facilities. Sit back and relax as the kids let loose at the playground. The calm water is safe for swimming, and there is an ocean rock pool where locals tend to do their morning laps.
The street behind the beach has a number of restaurants, where you can dine and take in sweeping views of the coastline. Stroll along the esplanade for your pick of restaurants, from gourmet establishments to cosy family eateries.
Scenic Lookouts around Pearl Beach
Widely considered one of the most scenic towns north of Sydney, Pearl Beach boasts numerous lookout points where you can snap some prime shots of the coast. Close to town, Umina Lookout affords views of the area’s beaches, all the way to Ettalong and Brisbane Water.
There are quite a few lookouts set on neighbouring Mount Ettalong, arguably the most scenic in the region. Drive part of the way up Mount Ettalong and head along the unpaved path which starts at the water reservoir. This trail leads to the clifftops directly above Pearl Beach. Look down the coast and you will be able to spy Sydney’s most northern beaches.
Venture along the clifftop path to access a series of other lookouts offering views of the coast and Bouddi National Park. To learn more about the lookouts, stop to read the information panels on the way.
Pearl Beach on Foot
Pearl Beach is a very walkable holiday destination. The village is home to the Crommelin Arboretum, where you can discover the region’s varied flora as you stroll along an extensive network of trails. You will go past wetlands, under rainforest canopies and through native bush.
For coastal vistas, try the Tony Doyle Walking Trail, 200m above sea level, directly above Broken Bay. This is a flat, easy track. You can access the path by hiking up from the town of Pearl Beach or Patonga. But beware: the path up is quite steep and best suited to those with a certain level of fitness.
Sports and Events in Pearl Beach
Pearl Beach is, mostly, a quiet seaside community, but you will also find activities to keep you occupied in town. Each year in March, Crommelin Arboretum hosts the well-known Opera in the Arboretum, which welcomes opera singers from around Australia.
Year-round, visitors can join locals to participate in various sports and classes. Pearl Beach offers two tennis courts and bowling facilities. If you wish to play, remember to make a reservation in advance.
Meanwhile, yogis on holiday will not have to give up their practice. Pearl Beach has several yoga studios within close proximity of the waterfront, where you can drop in for a class or two.
How to Get to Pearl Beach
Pearl Beach is located only 95 km from Sydney, ensuring an easy drive along the coast from NSW’s capital city. Conveniently, a train also runs from Sydney to the larger, nearby town of Woy Woy. From Woy Woy, you can catch a bus or taxi to Pearl Beach.
