Description

There are 2 cottages - The Inspectors & The General Managers. Both sit adjacent to one another & are located on a 300 acre property, at the foot of majestic sandstone cliffs. The property backs onto the Wollemi National Park and is at the head of the Colo R.

It also encompasses the "Ruins" of the oil shale mine which closed down in 1952. The property lies on the extremities of the township of Glen Davis, which when the mine was operating supported a vibrant community.

Tours operate every Saturday @ 2pm meet at the front gates or by appointment.

It is relatively isolated, and offers a magic experience of getting away from it all and just chilling out in spectacular scenery or seeking out as much adventure as one desires-

Wildlife abounds.....

Capertee Valley is listed as 1 0f 2 best birding locations in Australia out of 50 top world sites, in the US book - "Fifty Places to go Birding before you Die" by Chris Santella.

See our caperteevalley website for more information & apologies the Stayz calender is not used, as we also source our guests from other websites. So please always enquire.

The Inspectors Cottage has 4 bedrooms + sunroom with single bed. The General Managers has 3 bedrooms + sunroom with sofa lounge. Both have been renovated and each house accommodates 7- 9 people. All have ample heating and bedding with all modern facilities - new bathrooms and kitchens - all fully equipped for maximum comfort. Wildlife is plentiful. A great place for exploration, bushwalking, photography, sketching, star gazing, abseiling, or simply relaxing in nature

We have had many a birdwatcher, artist, photographer and friend, who vow they have never seen anything quite like it before - as good as anything anywhere in the world, and it has all been kept a secret, except to those who know better. It is the second largest valley in the world, after the Grand Canyon. So for an unforgettably different experience - you can relax and do nothing or you can do everything and only 3 hrs from Sydney.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Photography +++ What an amazing location. Hidden in the depths of a secret valley, not many know the treasures that Glen Davis has to offer. Running astrophotography workshops, we chose the Poplars as our base because the cottages gave us the space we needed to accommodate 10 participants in absolute comfort. With space to eat, teach and sleep for an entire weekend, we also had access to the Glen Davis Works shale oil refinery and staggering canyon walls all around to give us an epic foreground to capture Milky Way and Star Trail images. And with some of the clearest skies available only 3 hours away from the heavy light pollution of Sydney, the location is truly exceptional. Mary and John have been outstanding in their help and service throughout booking, arriving, staying, and departing. And the amazing renovation they have performed on these two dilapidated managers cottages is remarkable. Our participants gave high praise for their accommodation and their experience for the weekend, and we have already booked in for two more workshops in 2017, hoping to return every year. If you’re coming, don’t forget to join the tour of the Glen Davis Works. The history and the remnants of the shale oil industry juxtaposed against such a serene and peaceful backdrop of the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone National Parks is an unmissable experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing natural surrounds you could die for Our stay at Glen Davis was amazing with such a warm welcome from Mary who made sure we were happy with everything and great guidance on what we could do around the place. The property is so large you could go for an endless walk and with the national park next door and surrounded you can't get enough of bush walks and beautiful environment to get your health up! We had a great stay with our 2 dogs and they loved the stay as well with the warm fire place to add to the bonus! Thank you for the Olive oil! It was so nice we bought the extra bottle... :) The roads are bit rough near the property but I believe this is getting fixed at the moment... :) and should be good by the time we visit next time... Thank you for everything Mary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful weekend away We loved our stay at The Poplars. The history of the shale oil refinery was fascinating and we thoroughly enjoyed the Saturday afternoon tour. The natural beauty of the area was also incredible. It was a truly unique ... and also very interesting experience. The house was comfortable and welcoming ... and the local olive oil was delicious. Nothing at all to complain about. The owners were also a pleasure to deal with ... friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
