Sofala Cottage is a rammed earth miners Cottage – circa 1873. Edged by national parks and backing onto the Turon River this historic miners cottage is a perfect escape for lovers of nature and history, romantics and artists.

Sofala is situated in the beautiful Turon valley 40km north of Bathurst on the road to Hill End. Approximately 3 hours drive west of Sydney across the Blue Mountains. It is Australia’s oldest surviving gold town with a rich artistic history. The landscape is scarred by its past yet remains intensely beautiful. Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend visited the town in 1947. On arrival, Friend described Sofala as a ‘lovely crazy old village - perfect’.

Overseas visitors and local travellers will enjoy exploring the Upper Turon area for reminders of the gold rush days. The village has a genuine atmosphere and authentic charm. When you walk along the main road it's like stepping back in time.

Sofala cottage is a traditional miner’s cottage so the rooms are modest in size. The cottage is self contained with its own entrance and can accommodate up to 2 guests.

The bedroom has a queen size bed, living room with split system air conditioner and eat in kitchen with wood fired heater, hot plates, microwave, slow cooker, skillet, bar fridge and basic cooking facilities. The bathroom has a claw foot bath and toilet.

The cottage is made from rammed earth, a method of construction used in the area during the 1800s. The walls are extremely thick keeping the interior surprisingly cool during the hot Summer months.

There is a wonderful view from the front porch framed by "Nipple Mountain" - a local landmark. The landscape is scattered with the remains of Chinese diggings and an old cemetery sits quietly in the distance. The kangaroos are always present in the landscape and often visit the cottage for a graze or just to rest in the shade of one of the gardens many fruit trees.

Sofala Cottage is a perfect escape from the trappings of modern life. No TV, clocks, internet. There is limited mobile coverage but you can make calls from the garden at the entrance to the cottage. There is better reception in the village.

Sofala Cottage is run by artist Louisa Antico.

Louisa works from the premises behind the cottage. She is happy to offer guests support and recommendations when needed but understands that most guests prefer privacy.

During the cooler months there will be a heating surcharge of $10 per night wood supplied.

Please contact Louisa to confirm accommodation.

About the property & surrounding area

The property is surrounded by beautiful gardens planted with roses, iris, lavender, wisteria, bulbs and herbs. The herbs are there for picking so please help yourself. There are numerous old fruit trees including cherry, apple, peach, plums and figs. A hedge of large hazelnut trees keep the back garden cool in Summer and a variety of grape vines adorn the verandas.

If you're staying at the property when the trees and grape vines are fruiting please pick some for your table. The birds and local fauna will feast on the rest. Each season transforms the garden and surrounding landscape and has its own unique beauty. The bird life is abundant especially when the trees are in fruit.

Its a lovely walk to the village as you follow the winding road that runs alongside the Turon River. And drop into the Western Goldfields Museum and meet the curator Mr Wigglesworth on the way.

If you feel like a swim there's a water hole down the road that's a popular destination during the Summer months. Its approx. 1k down the road in the opposite direction to the village on the river side. There is also another great swimming hole at Wallaby Rocks which is situated just out of Sofala on the road to Hill End.

Trout fishing is also popular in the area and there are also gold fossicking tours you can book if you're feeling lucky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sofala Cottage is a gem! My daughter and I stayed at Sofala Cottage overnight en route to Hill End and our expectations were very pleasantly fulfilled by the cottage’s immediate charm and pared down simplicity and refinement. Fresh milk in the fridge, lovely range of Twinings teas and absolute quiet were a joy after our busy day. Our basic needs met in a lovely clean and comfortable environment we contemplated the past history of the cottage and times gone by… After a very restful sleep we woke and enjoyed the lovely garden surrounding the cottage reinvigorated for yet another day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely cottage Sofala Cottage was a unique blend of comfort and charm, perfectly in keeping with its history. It was equipped with everything needed for a relaxing stay, even a surprise of chocolate in the fridge! The surrounding gardens were beautiful with a choice of outside seating areas to make the most of both the morning and afternoon sun. A great place to unwind for a few days whilst exploring the surrounding areas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful cottage and surrounds We thoroughly enjoyed our 12 day stay here. A beautifully kept cottage, well appointed kitchen and very comfortable bedroom. Little touches like fresh cut flowers, fresh fruit from the garden and an eclectic book collection made our stay extra special. Despite the heat wave being experienced in the area at the time, the house stayed a comfortable temperature throughout our stay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a beautiful place to stay My partner and I stayed here over the weekend and we absolutely LOVED it! The spot was perfect and the house was so cosy and romantic. This is the perfect romantic weekend getaway. No TV, and no distractions - the perfect time to spend together. The house is absolutely gorgeous with every small detailed tended to - fresh flowers, beautifully arranged antique and vintage ornamaments that are in keeping with the histoical cottage. The kitchen is perfectly equipped to cook your own food. We enjoyed watching the sun set over the hill whilst we had some afternoon beers and cheese. The garden is beautiful to wander about or to sit in and read a book and just relax. Louisa was a lovely host, she was welcoming and also gave us privacy. We will definitely like to go back to Sofala for the weekend. Lots of things to do in the area - head to Bathurst for the day, check out the old Sofala Gaol and cafe, Hill End for a pub meal and game of pool! Orange is about an hour away for lunch or dinner. We loved it!
