Kalimna cottage has been welcoming guests for 20 years; some have been returning two and three times a year. Why does this happen? They KNOW the seclusion offered can allow them to totally chill out and escape the rush and bustle of their every day lives in an environment where they can enjoy nature...be they naturists or nature lovers!
Kalimna was built of andesite rock and timber and has just one queen sized bedroom and an open kitchen and living room. The entire cottage was designed in keeping with the Australian Standards for those with mobility limitations. The bathroom is perfection for our wheelie mates with more than necessary space for wheelchair circulation and all grab rails to assist these guests.
Being small Kalimna is very cosy in winter. It is fully insulated and the very efficient combustion heater is regularly commented upon. Being in a secluded part of Yeranda it was decided to set this cottage up to use solar power for lighting and gas appliances for all else. A gas fridge, hot water service and BBQ along with an elevated gas stove make it simple for everyone.
There are many books on hand that work as a book exchange for any guests who wish to bring along a book they no longer want and swap for one (or several) from Kalimna's collection.
The outside water dishes attract birds close to where guests sit on the verandah...we do ask that birds and animals not be fed but do enjoy watching them at the water dishes. (we cannot replicate their natural food and who knows what preservatives and salts are in bacon? Additionally birds that are hand fed become pests around the cottages.) Keep the water dishes topped up and you will be rewarded by the antics of birds bathing or drinking.
A walks map will see you off and checking out the 140 acre property if you are a keen bush walker. Some tracks are easy whilst others are far more challenging and should only be tackled by the fit and agile!
The Fun of a Camp Fire..during the cooler and safe months
An outside dedicated camp fire is the answer to enjoying sitting around after dark and enjoying yourselves under the stars. A gantry hangs the grill over the coals so a snag or two can be cooked there with the fat dripping directly on to the coals...healthy snags! There is a camp oven so for the adventurous camp cooks perhaps a stew (less chance of it burning on the bottom with that goodly dash of red wine in with the ingredients you use!) Dampers are often cooked...I might add , with mixed results. There is an art to cooking damper! Maybe google this before heading to Kalimna!
As with the inside fire we supply more than adequate fire wood at no additional charge along with kindling wood and fire lighters. We appreciate the wood is not wasted...by all means use what you need but follow the direction sheet for the inside combustion heater as closing down the controls slows down the burning process but also does not see the need to open all windows and doors when it gets too hot!
Topline Park Horse riding is just four kms towards town from Kalimna.
Great places to explore close by...
Yeranda is 17 kilometres from Dungog where there are a few nice eateries...cafe style, pubs and clubs. Gloucester is an hours drive away with nice places for a meal or snack. Forest drives are certainly worthwhile with Jerusalem Creek not more than 20 minutes away. For those who wish to explore a little further there is Blue Gum Loop or Rocky Crossing on the southern side of the Barrington Tops National Park. This NP is huge so any chance of seeing "it all" would not be possible even if you had unlimited time. Depending on your level of fitness and desires you may wish to tackle Carey's Peak at 154m asl...it is a very challenging climb but if the weather is favourable then the rewards are there. Amazing views towards Newcastle but you must always keep in mind that the conditions can rapidly change and heavy fog and cloud can move in with the very real chance of becoming lost. Always go prepared. Another wonderful place to visit is the Mountaineer which is spot on 55 minutes drive from Yeranda. At a much higher elevation the area supports wonderful stands on antarctic beech trees and towering tree ferns. The lyre birds run through their mimicry and you will feel as if you are a million miles from anywhere! The Dungog Common is very close to town and perfect for open walks or mountain biking. The Runcimans' are happy to give guests directions and you may wish for a NP brochure to be mailed to you prior to your visit so you can plan the outings you may wish to do.
